Former dirt tracker and current road racing hot property Ben
Bostrom, who signed a contract with American Honda on Friday
night (see sidebar), was having his first-ever ride aboard a super'
bike, his first·ever ride on slick racing tires and his first-ever ride
on any road racer bigger than a 600 at Sears Point. Still, the 22·
year·old Califomian put the" parts bin" Honda RC45 on the fourth
row with the 14th·fastest time. "The thing's the coolest, man."
the laid·back Bostrom said on Sunday morning. "I'm just starting
to get familiar with it. This track is hard, if s a tough place so
hopefully we'll be faster in Vegas (the next round of the senes on
October 6). My goal is to hnish in the top 1
okay, top five," he
said with a smile. "I just want to get a good finish and not crash. I
don't want to set the world on fire this weekend. II's so easy to
ride I can't tell 'em whafs wrong with it. I haven't touched it . I
don'l know what to do with it. The big difference is those guys get
it pointed quicker on the exits. [ can go in as quick and my comer·
ing speed is good, but I can't get it pointed as quickly asttrey do. I
guess they said the setup is somewhere between what Miguel
(DuHamel) and Mike (Hale) would use. II's way cool." Bostrom
was loading up on vitamins. lJying to recoller from the flu. He was
also tbe busiest rider on the weekend, having to race not only the.
Superbike but also the 600cc Supersport and Harley·Davidson
TwinSport races. Bostrom finished 12th in his superbike debut. "I
was all fired up," he said on Sunday afternoon. "I got a bitchio'
start and was sixth or seventh. I was thinking, 'we're hangin'. I
had new tires on and they were unscuffed. When I flicked it right
through the esses the front tucked and' I buried my knee in the
ground. Jt tried to pull me off the back but I think speed saved
us."

Honda's Gary Mathers denied rumors that Steve Crevier would
be bought out from the second year of his contract with American
Honda. '1 don't know where it started." Mathers said. "But it's
not true. We have a contract with Crevier for next year and we
fully intend to fulfill that. There's no question that he's had a tough
year, but he's gong well here. Martin
