Wood wails at Waterford Hillclimb Nationals By Rose Parmeter WATERFORD, OH, JULY 26-28 After a disappointing but respectable fifth-place finish at the '95 Vouth National Amateur Championships, Mike Wood reclaimed the 500cc-class title that belonged to him in '92 and '93, and succeeded witll a ride that easily won the class and stood as the fastest ride of the event. Wood sat in the top spot at the end of day one after climbing the relatively short but rugged incline in 5.781 seconds. On day two, Rick Parmeter caught Wood with a 5.433, but Wood looked confident as he waited through some SO other riders to take his final shot. Wood blasted out of the hole and launched pedectly over the jump, then quickly continued to the two-bulldozer-wide jump at the 12o-foot mark. Temporarily leaving the planet, Wood flew high above the hHi crew and then landed on the much-steeper top of the hill and on through the lights with an amazing 5.129-second ride, easily winning the class with a time that held through both the remaining 7SOcc and Open classes as the fastest ride of the event. In the 7SOcc class, top riders Rick Prebe and Jay Parmeter were both looking for a five-and-ahalf-second ride, bu.t both succumbed to mechanical problems and were forced to watch while Dave Perrigo clocked a 6.246 with a ride that looked like it would hold until Matt Nelson lit up his orange machine and smoked an amazing 5.587 for the win. Perrigo finished second, with Lloyd Haas in third. Prebe and Parmeter got lucky, finishing with national number-four and number-five finishes. "Irs just beginners' luck," said Nelson, who has been climbing .for only two years. He credited his success to his friends. "Mike Wood, Todd Cipala, Bill Paider, and Ryan Peterson, all national winners themselves, have taught me the ropes and gave me the confidence I needed to win," he said. Gpala took the Open-class victory in his typical "do it right the first time" style. He led the class on day one with a 6.459, and watched on day two as 30 other riders tried unsuccessfully to bust his time. Gary WaddeU make a quick trip up the hiU, but his 6.918 was just good enough for second place. Mike Bronk performed what looked like a winning ride, but a hard landing after a 5O-foot flight left Bronk grasping for his throttle, and he was unable to recover in tim·e. Cipala, riding his fast Harley only twice this year, said, "It was a good year, a great year, and if s a great bike." Results MINI JR: 1. Joseph Bibbler; 2. Nickolas Patchen; 3. Jason Prebe; 4. Burton, Tyer split OK City Half Mile By Nicslee Sowders OKLAHOMA mY, OK, JULY 28 Casey Burton took the 2SOcc Pro-Am victory while Jason Tyer thrilled spectators by taking wins in both the 600cc Pro-Am and Open Amateur classes at the fifth annual Randy Cleek Memorial race held at the Oklahoma City Half Mile. The 2SOcc Pro-Am race began as Casey Burton, Joe Snyder and Mark Witham aU challenged each other for the lead. The biggest move was made by Ray Arnold, who sprang from sixth position to third in a matter of three laps. Arnold had tried several times to pass Witham, but didn't make the pass stick until the last lap. Burton managed to hold off the charging Snyder to take the victory. In the 600cc Pro-Am class, last year's winner, Scott Deubler, jumped the start and was sent back to the penalty lineAljason Yager. got the holeshot as Tyer, Nick Daniels and Deubler gave chase. Vager and Tyer broke away from the pack to settle the battle for first between themselves. Yager led lap after lap until the very last lap, when Tyer got momentum from turn four and passed Vager inside at the line to steal the victory. Vager took second and Deubler in third after a close race with Daniels. The Open Amateur class was next, and Tyer got tJ;te holeshot and took a wire-to-wire win. Todd )Qtlier gave chase, but didn't have anything for Tyer and ended up in second. Taking a lone third was Bryan CoUins. In the 8Scc main, Carl Hickman grabbed the holeshot and led flag to flag. Cody Humphrey, Dusty Hening Jr. and Danny Eslick were engaged in a three-way battle for the second position. By lap four, Herring and Eslick's battle for second left Humphrey behind, and at the end it was Eslick in second as Herring's bike began to act up and Ryan Cheatum and Humphrey both passed him. Hickman took first, second went to Eslick and Cheatum claimed third. Results P/W STK: I. Ouistopher Hoddey (Yam); 2. Cameron Wilson (Yam); 3. josh Long (Yam); 4. lkYi Cilliam (Yam); 5. Che~turm Bagwill, Priputen hot at CRC Motocross By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, AUG. 10 Daniel Bagwill and Scott Priputen dominated the 12Sec Beginner and Novice classes, respectively, during the Simi Honda-sponsored round of California Racing Club's Saturday night motocross racing, held at Los Angeles County Raceway. Bagwill jumped out to the early first 12Sec Beginner moto lead over Masashi Motohashi and August Culver. Justin Witcher came flying up th{ough the pack in an attempt to run down Bagwill, and the two front-runners quickly pulled away from the others. Witcher kept Bagwill in Sight but had to settle for second at the checkers. Witcher got the jump on Bagwill when the gate dropped in the second mota, but his lead only lasted a half a lap before he went down in the sand. With Witcher out of the way, Bagwill easily distanced himself from the field for the convincing win. Tyson Tittlemier he'Id down second position up until the last lap, when he was caught by Motohashi and Witcher. Witcher and Motohashi passed Tittlemier and were sideby-side off the finish-line jump, with Witcher getting the nod for second overall.
