A month after the incident, I received a letter from a medical insurance company's law firm. They were trying to get information from me about the incident so they could sue the track. My response was short and sweet, and not printable in this pUblication. A.W. Dubois, San Diego, CA No bull I just heard a rumor that the Rainbow II motocross track was closed because a guy broke his arm and it got badlJ( infected due to the manure content of the soil. So he sued and track owner Bob Harvell lost his insurance. Is this true or just another manure story? If this is true, I surely hope the injured rider sells his bike and gear and tak'es up golf or bowling in another state. Bill Bouman San Oemente, CA Harvell was recently forced to c/ose his track in Hemet, California, due to a lawsuitinduced insurance problem... Editor. Hatch's thanks We are Americans. We are strong and on a mission to bring home the ISDE World Trophy. This year was our strongest effort yet and we owe thanks to the fans, workers, ESPN2, families, manufacturers, sponsors and the whole motorcycling community. I want to thank each and every person who supported our team - those who traveled to FinJ.and and those who were here at home. It is an honor to represent the United States of America. All I have to say is that I can't wait for Italy. Steve Hatch Ithaca, NYHatch was a member of the U.S. Trophy Team which finished third in the recent ISDE in Finland. "Mr. Dirt" well remembers the August 23, 1975, Indy Mile. With one lap left, HarleyDavidson factory rider Keener and a new kid on the block - one Jay Springsteen - were leading and having a bit of fun out front while trying to set each other up for the run to the checkered flag. Meanwhile, Kenny Roberts, on an ill:handling, over-powered and blindingly-fast-if-he-could-get-the-powerto-the-ground-and -get-the-d amnthing-to-turn Yamaha TZ750-engined dirt tracker was half a lap behind in third. On the final lap, Roberts used up all the track and probably a few of the hay bales lining the turns to close dramatically on the leaders. "King Kenny" launched his final attack off turn four on the unsuspecting duo up front. Roberts, running at warp speed while Keener and Springsteen reacted, pipped the two at the line for the win. As an associate editor for Cycle News at the time, Van Voorhis was fortunate enough to be covering the event that night at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds. As the above photo shows, Kenny Roberts - and 'ris VMax- has shown the ability to slide just about anything... Editor. Letters to the editor should be sent to Voices, Cycle News, P.O. Editor. Afterwards, Keener could only shake his head and say that he knew he was in trouble when he heard "that screaming s.o.b" coming. Once the blood returned to the white knuckles of his throttle hand, Roberts in a masterful understatement - noted: "They don't pay me enough to ride that thing." It was definitely a night to remember. My husband and I are avid Mike LaRocco fans. We've seen him through the ups and downs, but never once have we lost the faith in this guy. Every rider has his moments in the spotlight and we'll never forget the National Championships that he's won. But now he's with a different team and his luck isn't going right for some reason. We've watched and reviewed his races and he is still the most awesome racer on the track, and the most deteonined. We've had the pleasure of meeting Mike and his wife, Elizabeth, at hQth the Texas events. They are truly an exceptional couple and a loving family race team. At this time I would like to ask a favor of all the LaRocco fans.. Please get ou t there and show your support for this gUy. Let him hear you at the races. Even though he's shy, he loves to hear your cheers. We also would like to wish the LaRoccos a happy first wedding anniversary on September 30.
