Nick Vargo took the early lead in moto one of Senior Mini, but hard-charging Brannon Ferguson suckered him in a comer and took command. Lap after lap, Ferguson held off Vargo's challenges and looked to have things under control. But coming through the new hilltop section for the last time, Brannon's KX slipped out from under him, handing the lead and the moto win to ick. Jeremy Hill, Matt Blevins and Jason Mayberry filled out the first-moto top five. The second outing of Senior Mini was all Vargo's, and the rest of the top four remained the same except for Mayberry, who feU and was replaced by Ferguson's younger brother Chris. Super Mini racing featured a continuation of the Vargo/Ferguson battle, with Brannon coming close several times, but at the checkers it was Vargo in both motos. Carl Vargo found himself following fast-guy Nicky Baker in both outings of 30+ A. In the first moto, Carl seemed to be assured of a secondplace finish, but a miscue in a still-slick section put a surprised Ricky Joyce in second instead. "I've been riding in the woods for over a year now," Joyce, a former Vet A-class powerhouse. '1£ Donny Yelton would plant some trees in the middle of the track, it would make me feel more at home. Vargo took advantage of the improved traction in his second moto to keep Joyce behind him, securing second overall to Baker's win. Sweeten tastes victory at Mulino Trials ' By Ruaa GazIer MUUNO, OR, JULY 28 Dennis Sweeten pulled off an unusual feat, winning two different classes in the Columb.ia Observed Trials Association's 18th Annual Drift Creek Dabber, taking both the Expert class and the recently inaugurated Vintage class. Sweeten, a former professional motocross racer, was favored to win the Expert class and did so convincingly, collecting only 47 penalty points over a tough lO-section, three-loop course. Sweeten's performance in Vintage was at least as impressive, stopping, hopping and balancing a clunky old Bultaco to first place with a m.iniscuJe three points over the same course as the Intermediate class. GOTA has two "Vintage" claSSes, one for old motorcycles ('70s and older) and one, the Senior class, for chronologically challenged riders (over 35). Dave Speast turned in a fine nine-point ride to win the Senior class, which also used the Intermediate sections. Dan Dwyer and Blake 'Landon, in the Advanced class, didn't decide first place until late in the last loop. Another really tight finish was in Intermediate, where every time one of the top riders dabbed he had lost another position. Mike Kerr, Torry Leftridge and Bob Reed so (4·6): 1. Trials marshal Kary Krahel described the event: "This is the best attended COTA meet this year both for riders and spectators. I took some trials bikes to a couple of local motocross events and handed out Ayers. A lot of the spectators had never seen a trials event, and were just about blown away by what some of these guys can do with a motorcycle." Results EX: 1. Dennis Sweeten (Bet) 47; 2.
