International GP Series by Idemitsu and HAC Round 6: PorIIand InlemaIionaI Raceway PI LLI'S WIN ING! YOU I GON? PORTI.AND, OR, AUG. 11 oto Liberty Honda's Masahiro Iizuka won his fourth race in a row, though this one wasn't as easy as most. He had to battle with both a slipping clutch and Oregonian Nobi Iso to win the International GP by Idemitsu and HRC at Portland International Raceway, and even then, not by much. It wasn't a shock when Iizuka bolted into the lead. What was surprising was how Iso stuck to him. The Honda-mounted riders left the battle for third and ran in tandem for the entire race, with Iizuka never gaining more than a few lengths at a time and Iso riding hard to hang tight. In fact, he was riding so hard, that he nearly came off more than once. "Three or four times 1 almost crashed, but I am happy to have finished in second," Iso, who has been racing at Portland for six years, said. • At the finish line, it was Iizuka by 0.340 second and all of that was gained on the final lap, much of it as they began the right-left combination onto the back straight. That was where Iso was having trouble hooking up, and the Honda skipped to the left when he got on the gas and caused him to back out of the throttle. When he did it on the final lap, it virtually killed any chance he had of making a draft-pass on Iizuka on the back straight and hurt his position entering the long front straight. "My clutch was slipping, but I am very happy with the win," Iizuka said after extending his championship points lead. After six of nine races, Iizuka leads Vicky Jackson-Bell 197-166. Jackson-Bell was fourth today after a long and spirited battle with Marcello del Giudice. The pair settled in behind the leaders, not able to match the top two's early pace. Del Giudice took over third on the fifth of nine laps and eased away to where he was a comfortable third at the finish. "I wish we could have all stayed together," del Giudice lamented. Still, his third-place finish moved him up to third in the point standings. Portland's own Richard Matthews finished fifth, the Honda rider well alone for nearly the entire race and in no positioo. to put heat on Jackson-Bell Matthews was followed by Lu Ulcourte and Bruce Lind.v.
