Round 5: Portland International Raceway
PORTLAND, OR, AUG. 11
ornetown hero Shawn Roberti
ran away from the 23-rider EBC
Brakes Sportbike field, easily
winning the race on a track he said he
had been around probably "400,000
times." From the flash of the green,
Portland's Roberti turned his green
Kawasaki ZX-6 into a ghost, disappearing at a comfortable clip and never in
danger of doing anything but winning
at Portland International Raceway.
"I've been racing here 11 years,"
Roberti, who said he would retire after
this season, said. "I might be old, but I
can still get it on."
There would be no argument from
fellow'Oregonian Jimmy Moore. The
Honda F3-mounted Eugene resident
jumped straight into second, but was
never able to draw Roberti in. His competition would come from behind, Bandit International's Matt Wait making up
for a somewhat lackluster start before
carving his way through the pack.
Ending the first lap, Wait was in
sixth, then fourth a lap later, but with
some distance on the battle for second.
At the time that battle was being waged
between Moore and series points leader
Reuben Frankenfield, the latter aboard
the Greenwood Motorsports Kawasaki.
Those two were able to clear away from
the pack and it wasn't until the sixth of
13 laps that Wait could draw a bead on
the pair.
.Wait was by Frankenfield going into
turn seven and then set out for Moore.
But third was as iar as he would get. No
amount of prodding could dislodge
Moore from his spot and Wait was a
shadow third to Moore at the flag.
Roberti had already crossed the line 2.91
seconds in front of Moore to notch his
first EBC Brakes Sport Bike win.
Frankenfield was well alone' in
fourth, and he motored to a solid fourth,
extending his points lead.
After five of eight rac;', Frankenfield
leads Jim Lester, seventh today, 131 to
102. Wait moved into a third place tie
with Steve Johnson, who finished in
12th place today, with both holding 97
points.
Behind Frankenfield there were a
number of two-rider spats. The one over
fifth was between two Northwesterners,
Kirkland, Washington's Jason Fraser
and Medford, Oregon's David Cook.
Though Cook kept his Beaverton Honda
close most of the race, Fraser urged his
J&R Rentals Kawasaki away from Cook
on the final lap.
Behind them, Jim Lester and Ke.vin
Rentzell ran together from about midrace
on, contesting seventh. Lester was able to
hold a very tenuous lead right up to the
penultimate lap when Rentzell slipped
by. The Georgian held the spot again on
the final lap, but was run down by Lester
at the flag and had to se'!,le for eighth.
