(Left) Former High SChool National Champion Matt Moore showed a newfound level of confidence and mental strength at Donner. The teen had several spectacular rides and went 8-7. tally. The next-best cards were turned in by Canadian Ryon Bell and Oklahoma's Matt Moore. Both had 30. "After the first lap, everyone was telling me, 'It's yours, man, no one can touch you now!'" said Kempkes. "I hate when people do that, talk me all up. To me it's just a bunch of smack and it messes with my head." Kempkes dropped a five in section three and admits that he became fIusteredo "I got mad and that messed me up," he said. '1 dropped three more fives all in a row after that." Kempkes was able to improve slightly on his third and final loop with a 21, but there would be no. touching Aaron. The champ came home with 16 and endedhis day with 33, less than six of the Championship class riders had after their first loops. "I worked hard for the win today," said Aaron. "The sections weren't as brutal, but we were all tired from yesterday. I rode my best on the first lap, and had some mistakes on the second and third ones, but I'm happy. For a change, I have the points l~ad heading into the final event. For the last two years, I've had to win both days to come from behind and get the championship." , Kempkes' brilliant first lap was what realistically secured his runner-up position. He ended the day with 48, well clear of Clamagirand's surprising 56. "I am surprised to do so well again," said Clamagirand. I had many crashes this weekend, I am hurt just about everywhere. I will be sore for at least two weeks." . Fourth went to a disappointed Youn who could not seem to et it together on the second day. "I can't really explain it," he said. "I just didn't feel competitive today. I was more into showboating for the crowd than concentrating on riding." Bell rounded out the top five and was pleased with his performance. "I feel like Briefl I'm improving a lot," he said. "Every loop I had a better score." Beta's Lonny Hallsted appeared to be having a miserable day in the early going, but a 22-point final loop vaulted him up to sixth. Moore, Peters, Manniko and Dennis Sweeten completed the top 10. ex ••• Over 200 _ showed up to test themselves on both days of competition at the Dollner Sk. Ranch·promoted Sacramento P .1"T .S-organized event. Additionally. over 12.000 spectators showed up to watch the action between the tapes. A four-mile loop was run on each day. with 12 sec· tions on Saturday, and 14 on Sunday, Over 200 of the facility·s 460 acres were used: Exceptionally wann weather greeted riders on ·Saturday. and the heat. combined with the difficult level of the sections and the high-eJevation loeatlon, caused many riders to "bonk out." Extreme fatigue and muscle cramps were common, with the most notable cases being reported' by Orntier C18" 'magirand and Lonny HaRstecl. After finishing third on Saturday.
