With over 260 entries at round three of the
HammerHead/ Pepsi Pro-Am Grand Championship Series, one rider stood out as a top contender. Honda-mounted Shane Templeton from
nearby Hillsville, Virginia.
Templeton looked strong from the start of
the day when he took the win in the event's
opening mota, the 250cc A cia s. Templeton
rode to a hard-fought win over tough riders like
Patrick Slate and Team Green's Mitchell
Hodges. But Templeton's quest for a double
moto sweep was ruined with a first-tum crash
that resulted in a ONF. Slate and Hodges, too,
experienced trouble before the race was through
and fell to third and fourth, respectively, allowing newcomer and first-time A-class winner
Chris Anstead to take the overall in the premier
class. Anstead barely edged out Suzuki rider
Brandon Turlington, while Hodges netted third
over Slate and Allen Alford.
Templeton did come back, however, to take
two perfect moto wins and sweep the Over 25
class. Templeton rode a flawless race but had to
stay on his toes because Alford, too, fared better
in the Over 25 clas than he had earlier in the
day and kept the pressure on Templeton to the
very end. Alford hooked up with Vann Gibson,
and the heated battle between the two helped
them keep the flying Templeton in sight during
the first moto. In the econd moto, Alford
hooked up with Mike Eastwood, but the end
result was the same in both motos: Alford finished second behind Templeton. Eastwood
edged out Gibson for the final podium spot and
Brad Crouch rounded out the top five on a paiT
of fifth-place finishes.

RAINIER. WA, jUlY 20
Chris Fitzhugh rode to victory in the Pro Twinclass feature race at the Rainier Cycle Bowl's
AMA District 27 short track in Rainier, Washington.
Fitzhugh won the class heat race over fellow
Expert Troy Rose, while Mike HarTH netted
third. Harritt, the district number-one plateholder in the class, tried to put the stops on Fitzhugh
after "Bouncin' Bob" Malley's green flag let
loose the main-event finalists. but Fitzhugh
squeezed past and convincingly pulled away for
a win in the 2Q-Iap final. Rose, Harritt, and Rod
Estes were left to squabble over second. Harrit
finally managing to edge out Rose for the po ition. Willie Ward took fourth, while Estes finished in fifth.
Three heat races were organized to finalize
the lineup in the filled-to-capacity 250cc Sportsman class. George Prindiville, Eric Beers, and Joe
Lenz each took a heat victory, but it was Lenz
whose strong performance was capped off by a
win in the 12-ride.r, 100Iap A-class main event.
Prindiville did all he could to take Lenz's
lead away, but his efforts were to no avail.
Bryon Dotson, Beers, and Robert Rosie rounded
out the top five ahead of Scook Coffell and former BOcc National Champion Jake Holden.
Nation IT contender Del Schnitzer showed
his short track prowess by topping the
Expert/ Pro Am final, beating Fitzhugh, Rose,
Jeff Holford, Russ Lynch, and Pete Medcalf,
respectively.
