Upcoming Rounds: Round 10- Rapid City, SD, Aug. 7 Round 11 - Lincoln, NE, Aug. 10 Briefly_ ..._ Spectro/Moroney's Harley-Davidson rider Jason Fletcher missed the Peoria nand will likely be out for several races after suffering a broken collarbone and facial lacerations in a crash while testing the engine on one of his race bikes near his Warren, Connecticut, home. Fletcher was reportedly reaching down to adjust the carburetor when he apparently hit a pothole and lost control of the machine. Fletcher was not wearing a helmet when he crashed, Bzzzzz! F ormer AMA 600cc National d\ampion Mickey fay competed at the Peoria TT aboard a Honda CR500 project bike supplied by Cycle World magazine and showed that a 500ce two-stroke can indeed run with the Rotax and KTM dirt trackers. "It was originally set up as a Supermotard bike with 17-inch wheels for road racing," Cycle World Associate Editor Don Canet said. "We needed a place to race it, because there are no Supermotard races in the U.S. We were going to have Ricky Graham ride it at Pike's Peak, but that fell through. We were just lucky that Mickey didn't have a ride. He'd sold his bike a couple of weeks ago and he called the AMA to cancel his entry. Graham found out and he contacted Fay for us. Mickey agreed to ride it." Fay went out in practice and appeared to quirky adapt to the machine, complaining only that the handlebars were narrower than he was used to. An attempt to switch to wider bars was foiled when it was determined that the CR's stock throttle cable wasn't long enough to accept them, so Fay was forced to ride with the narrower units. But the 38-year-old TT specialist &om Washington continued to improve, qualifying for the event through his scratch heat and then taking advantage of a bobble by Steve Morehead late in the regular heat to put the • machine in the main event via a direct transfer. Fay went on to finish 15th in the main event and offered a fair amount of praise for the machine. "If a guy rode this thing eve')' weekend, he could go faster on it every time," fay said. "We were down a couple horsepower, and there are a couple things that l'd change, like I think it could use more fuel. I reallzed that I'd only be running in the middle of the pack, but I made the main. It's a pretty good bike. If a guy wanted to race dirt track, he could build one of these into a pretty good dirt tracker for $6500. That's about less than half of what a new Wood Rotax costs." - but we had a lot of good luck today. And I'll win it any way that I can, Chris Carr or no Chris Carr." {N (Hon); 4.
