By Matt Benson LEXINGTON, OH, JULY 20 ne of the best things about MidOhio Sports Car Course from a spectator's point of view is the parklike infield section, with its shade trees and gras y, rolling hillsides. On this sunny Saturday there were plenty of spectators taking in the AMA's Vintage Motorcycle Days, but they had to share the infield with a slew of vintage motocrossers. AHRMA's Jeff Smith and crew laid out a fast natural-terrain course that except for its short length was not unlike many of the tracks he rode while chasing British, European and World Championships for BSA in the 1950s and '60s. Some grumbled about the lack of jumps and other attributes of purpose-built MX tracks, and grass quickly gave way to dust in places, but the 25and 30-year-old motorcycles were right at home in the e conditions. It was motocross like it used to be, so it was fitting that some of the closest O Feet up (Above) John Ziska (479) won the 125cc Expert class during vintage motocross action at Mid-Ohio. (Right) Mike Hosafros rides his Norton SOOT during the trials portion of the vintage weekend. racing involved the two-time 500cc World Champion. Aboard a Can-Am 250, Smith went at it in both 50+ Expert races with Jean Ramsay on a Maico 400. In the first race, Smith pushed Ramsay all moto long, then nipped him entering a tricky off-camber hillside traverse on the fifth of six laps. Smith hung on to the lead through the final circuit. T!le second moto saw Smith grab the holeshot and narrowly hold off a constantly probing Ramsay. Trouble was, the AHRMA executive director's start was a little too good, and he was penalized a lap, giving Ramsay a 2-1 score and the overall win. With a field made up almost exclusively of 1974 Honda Elsinores, Sportsman 125 is the closest thing AHRMA has to a spec class, and the racing is invariably close. The first Expert moto was a super race between Jay Kinder and Mike Boggia. At the finish, it was Kinder by inches over Boggia, with Darin Emswiler trailing closely. Boggia ran into mechanical p.roblems in moto two, leaving Kinder to spend the race keeping Emswiler at bay. The overall went to Kinder, with Emswiler's 3-2 scores good enough for second, and Carl Mabry going 4-3 for third. The action wasn't all in the Expert ranks. In the 30+ Novice race Terry Schwark and Robert Groves had a fine race for the lead throughout the opening moto. The second time out it was Bradley Kennard holding the lead, until he was chased down and passed by Mike Parker. Groves was third and Schwark fourth, again battling. When the calculations were finished, the overall win was awarded to Groves (2-3), followed by Schwark (1-4), Parker (1-5) and Kennard (4-2). Four riders found it all to their liking, each winning a pair of classes. BSAmounted Steve Tucker scored wins in Classic 250 and 500cc Expert, while Mike Treadway used a Honda XL350-powered machine to win Sportsman 500cc and one of the two 40+ Intermediate divisions. Bultaco pilot Joseph Light reigned in Classic 500cc and 30+ Inter- By Matt Benson LEXINGTON, OH, JULY 21 he challenge for the layout crew was to set up a trial that would be readily accessible to the many spectators at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, yet stiU test the competitors. Fortunately, organizers were up to the task. Located behind Mid-Ohio's shower building, the trial drew a large number of spectators, equaled on the AHRMA trials circuit only by the September event held in a municipal park at Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Likewise, with nearly 75 entries, the turnout was second only to Steamboat. The seven sections made full use of a very large, grassy mound of dirt and an adjacent wooded area. Just about every foot of one long ditch had a trials section winding across or through it. The mild terrain yielded rela tively low scores. In the highly competitive Premier Lightweight class, Bob Ginder dabbed just once in three times around the loop on his Greeves to win the Expert division. Daniel Moriarty lost only seven points aboard a Triumph Cub in the Intermediate class, far outpacing the 20-point ride of Chris Makynen and Dennis Brown's 22 marks. In Modern Classic Expert, Peter Siesser edged out Scott Beattie by a twopoint margin, while Matt ParsOns was just one point further back. The other two winners in Modern Classic - John Rodis in Intermediate and James Trimble in ovice - both turned in clean scorecards for the day, as did Rick Froelich in the Beginner class. eN T PREM sao EX, 1.
