Joji Takomoto, the previous round's winner, was suffering from a midpack start but rapidly moving up to third on the third lap. Quintero seized an opportunity to slip past John Ulrich on the fourth lap and then held him at bay when rain started coming down on the seventh lap, bringing out the red flag to keep the slick-shod GP bike riders safe. The sharpest racing of the day was found in Middleweight GP. Frankenfield led from the start with Gilleland and · 'Landers trailing him by the end of lap one with Himmelsbach in hot pursuit. . By lap five, Frankenfield who had just one race for rest, Landers and HimmeJ.s.bach were drafting down the long front straight. On lap severi, in turn three, Landers fell after bumping tires with Frankenfield while trying to pass him. The resulting crash left Landers with a broken left collarbone and a destroyed Honda, and slowed Frankenfield enough to all9w Himmelsbach to start pressuring the leader. Himmelsbach drafted past for the lead at the finish line on the start of lap nine only to have Frankenfield slip by again. On the last lap, Himmelsbach hung close, and entering the carousel, used his TZ250's cornering speed and quickness to head out of the last turn in the lead. Himmelsbach prevailed, thwarting Frankenfield's bid to become a double winner. Formula One was run under wet conditions. Grant Lopez watched the previous 750cc Superbike Novices deal with the wet and drag-strip surface to learn the best lines onto and down the slippery drag-strip straightaway. By doing so, Lopez took home the lion's share of .the WERA purse and moved himself into a better points position with only four more WERA Nationals left to run. Many riders chose not to grid for this, the last race of the day, and had to contend with the very slippery turn 15, which exits onto an IRP drag strip launch area that is coated with VHT. The compound sprayed Qn the track is great in the dry but very slippery when wet.
