Randy Mamola made a return to racing at Donington Park in England on July 20, riding to ninth place in the Triumph Triple Trophy race on a Triumph threecylinder. He'd dropped almost to 20th in the opening laps, then picked his way through. "We've seen European Touring Car racing, where guys bash each other all the time. The Triumph race was wor e," Mamola said. "We always say a 500 is hard work to muscle around, but they're nothing compared with 200 kg (440 pounds) of Triumph with street brakes." Former 250cc World Champion and noted Grand Prix tuner Kel Carruthers won his first-ever personal watercraft race as a crew chief / engine builder when Westcoast Sea-Doo's Tom Bonacci won the premier 785 Pro Runabout class during round seven of the IJSBA Bud Jet Sports Tour in Pontiac, Michigan, on July 21, on a Sea-Doo built by Carruthers. Those attending the Tustin Thunder Road Races, a three-day vintage race car event in Tustin, California, on August 24, will have the opportunity to view the new BMW F650 motorcycle. Brown Motor Works of Pomona, California, and Irv Seaver's of Orange, California, will be displaying the F650 along with other 1996 BMW model. Frank White, the former o~er/ president of ATK America, suffered severe chest injuries while trail riding with the UTMA on July 13 in a remote area near Fish Haven, Idaho. White is at home recuperating and will most likely miss the last fouI rounds of the USRA desert racing series. West Valley Occupational Center is offering vocational motorcycle mechanics training, beginning on Tuesday, September 3. The center is located in Woodland Hills, California. For more information, call 818/346-3540. Woodrow "Woody" Leone Sr. of Beaumont, Texas, has been named the latest recipient of the -AMA's Dud Perkins Award. Leone, 78, is an AMA Charter Life Member, holding membership number 999. He received the award in honor of his numerous contribu tions to the motorcycle industry and motorcycle sport during a ceremony conducted by AMA President Ed Youngblood in Houston, Texas. Several noted racers found success on Leone-tuned Triumphs, including Skip Van Leeuwen, Dick Hammer, and Darrell Doval. Speaking of the Six Days, according to Dave Bertram, who is also the team manager of the U.S. Trophy Team, the trail mileage for the Finnish Six Days will be much longer than what was first announced. The average daily mileage the 400-plus competitors will have to ride will be at least 200 miles, the longest being Day Three. That day will see the start time moved up one hour to give the riders extra time to cover the 248 miles that is currently scheduled. "Since the average rainfall in Finland is approximately 15 inches of rain a month, rain is going to be a big concern," said Bertram. "If it rains, there's going to be a lot of deep ruts, sandy, soft soil, so it (the trails) could be bad." In order to prepare for the event, U.s. World Trophy rider Scott Summers has laid out a 7-mile loop near his house and has been riding over 170 miles a day on it. "This year's Six Days could' be one of the toughest yet," said Bertram. Harley-Davidson Credit has introduced a motorcycle leasing program wHh terms as long as 36 months, acc!,rding to Harley-Davidson. Under the leasing program, customers gain the same flexibility, lower payments and convenience that characterize popular automotive leasing programs. The program is available at dealerships in CaJifornia, Florida, Nevada, Ohio and Texas right now and will be available in the rest of the country later in 1996. There will be four riders competing in . the 250cc class on the U.S. World Trophy Team: Rodney Smith will ride a Suzuki RMX250, as will Steve Hatch; Ty Davis will ride a Kawasaki KX250, and Chris Smith aCRE 250. Five-time ational Enduro Champion Randy Hawkins will compete in the 125cc class on a Suzuki RM125. Every team must enter at least one four-stroke class rider, and Scott Summers will have that responsibility on a Honda XR600.
