LaRocco were all right there, but just a way back. "1 didn't see anybody at the first turn," said Emig. "And as a rider that's one of the best feelings in the' world there's nothing better." Albertyn ended up going down in the corner before the Gravity Cavity and remounted outside of the top 10. By the end of lap one he was already up to eighth - behind LaRocco and one position in front of McGrath. . Up front, Hughes surprised Emig and made a pass for first place ·that stuck during lap one. Hughes would hold the lead until about lap six, when Emig regained the lead on a downhill in the back section. . "1 had a good lead and was feeling good,"said Hughes. "1 had good lines imd when Jeff (Emig) closed in he saw my lines, started using them, and caught me. Lappers got in the way and he got byrne." Lewis was holding down third at about 10 seconds behind Emig and Hug'hes, but behind him LaRocco, Henry, McGrath, Bradshaw, and Albertyn were having a seriously close duel for fourth through eighth positions. McGrath went down when his front wheel washed out in a flat turn, which put him back to eighth. Ward followed in ninth and Phil Lawrence was in 10th. Emig and Hughes were pretty much gone at this point - or so we all thought until Albertyn charged through the group and into third on lap 10 followed by Lewis and LaRocco, and Henry and McGrath. Both pairs of riders were dicingheavy. LaRocco started fading with engine trouble, and Albertyn finally charged up to catch Hughes on lap 14. He was definitely the fastest man on the track at this point and had his sights set on the leader Emig. Albertyn may have cal:'ght Emig had the time not run out for the South African on lap 15. McGrath got around Lewis on the last lap, as did LaRocco - seemingly finding the lost power that cost him a few positions earlier. Emig took the win followed about five seconds back by Albertyn, who had put about eight seconds on Hughes in third. McGrath finished fourth with LaRocco, Lewis, Bradshaw, Henry and Lawrence following. F&S Suzuki/Bieffe/FMF rider Cliff Palmer had a strong ride to finish off the top 10. The start of the second mota looked like a replay of the first, with Emig raging off with the lead to the first corner. After the firs t corner Lewis dropped into second with Ward, Hughes, McGrath, Bradshaw and the rest of the pack mixing it up toward's the front. Emig came into a freshly watered part of the track in the lower ba'ck section and went down. hard with second-place rider Lewis crashing also after casing it off Emig's bike. Both riders remounted, but Emig's bars were bent and his front brake lever was tweaked downward. Emig's hopes of the overall victory were all but dashed in the spill. Ward inheri ted the lead and came around on the first lap with about a sixsecond lead over Hughes, chased by McGrath, Bradshaw, Albertyn, LaRocco, and Swink. Emig came around in about 14th and Lewis in 15th. Bradshaw soon found himself going down on the back straightaway and McGrath got by Hughes to drop into second on lap three. Albertyn passed Hughes near the finish line to move into third on lap six. Ward was riding a heck of a race and was hold off McGrath after feverish pass attempts Wiseco Congratulates....
