EVENTS· Winner Tom Sisson (6) leads the hotlycontested Semi-Pro Money class In round three of the GFTL Dirt Track series In Carnesville, Georgia, under pressure from second-place finisher Rod Burr (hidden) and third-place finisher Darrell Bryant (7t). class, but once again couldn't touch the blazing cornering speed of Tysor. Tom Sisson got a tremendous holeshot on his 500cc in the Semi-Pro money class, an advantage that was more than any other rider could overcome. Sisson was followed by 600cc rider Rod Burr and last year's class champion Darr.1I Bryant, also aboard a 6OOcc. Close to the halfway mark, Burr began to put some distance on Bryant and close the gap Sisson had taken at the start. As the while flag waved Burr was right on Sisson's rear fender. Unfortunately for Burr, time ran out as Sisson took the win as well as the points lead in the series. Burr crossed the line just inches behind for second, with Bryant hanging on for third and 250ee rider Chris Hemphill bringing the only two-stroke in the field up to fourth. Action was intepse from the start of SOee (46) racing, Clayton Sims bouncing back from a hard crash two laps from the finish to take his fir t win of the season. Jonathan Pierce and Patrick johnson piloted to second and third, respectively. . In 85cc action, Garrett Weaver continued his dominance of 1996, winning two out of three races this season. Second was the hard-charging Merritt Johnson, with Barron Behanna Jr. pulling in a fine ride for third. Results whoops, catching himself only afier Cox had slipped by on the inside. This gave Danny Morgan and Armstrong a chance to catch and challenge Stankard. Stankard and Morgan then hooked up and pulled away from Armstrong. Stankard suddenly seemed to find his stride in the comers, and pulled away from Morgan. . Morehead heads Buckeye Speedway By Len Breech 40 ORRvrLLE, OK, JUNE 28 Steve Morehead took the 7SOcc Expert runaway win at the Buckeye Speedway Regional in Orrville, Ohio, his first such win in two years. "I was just having fun:' said Morehead. "It was slick for the first few laps after the water. I saw George almost falloff on the pace lap." Morehead won the first qualifier, keeping Ian Segedy and jason Fletcher and the dusty raceway in check. Regional points leader George Roeder also collected a heat win, but with some difficulty. "We hadn't touched the bike since Norwalk," Roeder said. "We fired it up and broke the gear box. We changed the transmission and here we are." Kevin Varnes and Chris Hart took control of the two 600ee Expert preliminaries. Scott Shinn, Marco Morello, Tim Eades and Mike McKee collected front-row starts with wins in the Pro-Am, 600cc, and 250cc heats, respectively. 50 (4--6): 1. Oayton Sims (Han); 2. Kelly Dexter The 250ee Pro-Am main belonged to McKee, who lead a dusty rubber-band affair from the start of the race to its premarure end. Eades and Morello waited for a mistake on McKee's part that never came. With seven laps completed, Kevin Hilbert fell in rurn three, bringing out the red nag and the referee's call to end the event. Chris Hart took control of the 600cc Expert main away from pole-sitter Kevin Varnes by the end of the first tour of the slippery raceway. Hart continued to show the way for the first part of the main until Varnes regained the lead and never looked back. Hart held on for second position, saying later, "I got tired on a new bike that is getting worked out." The 600cc Pro Am took two tries to get under way. The first start didn't get any further than the first tum, all of the combatants trying to occupy the same track space at the sam.e time. Bobby Decker was the recipient of the pinball action, and was up but unable to make the restart. Shinn lead the event from flag to flag. Steve johnson rumed in one of his better rides of the year for a third-place finish, while Morello maintained his second place in the regional standings with his finish behind Shinn. Morehead selected the inside pole position but Roeder took the lead into the first rurn, eventually giving it up to Morehead, who held on to take the win. "I'm happy with second:' said Roeder, "after all of the trouble we had today. We're just getting ready for tomorrow." Ian Segedy turned in a great ride for third, despite a broken seat. Tysor, Sisson smash GFTL Dirt Track By John Blackstock Photo by Wes Freeman CARNESVILLE, GA, JUNE 21 Greg Tysor put on quite a show at the Georgia Karting Komplex in Carnesville, Georgia, finishing atop the charts in the Adult Mini, the Semi~Pro Mini, and the 200cc division in round three of the GFTL Dirt Track series as Tom Sisson made off with the Semi-Pro Money class. John Blackstock (Vam). .so Yurkovic shines at Barona Oaks Motocross By Homer Eubanks RAMONA, CA, JULY 7 Steve Yurkovic triumphed over a field of 125cc ovke and Lntermediate riders, showing the stuff he's made of at Barona Oaks MX in Ramona, California, in the 11th round of a 21race series. The 12Scc Novice Modified and Intermediate classes were combined together, a.llowing Yurkovic to strut his sruff as the novice bested the field in both motos. Intermediate rider Manny Arais appeared to have the fir t mota under control, but Yurkovic stole the show on the second-to-Iastlap. In the Pro class it was business as usual for Dustin Nelson as he quickly put away the competition at the gate. jesus Casillas came out and dominated th.e SOee (9-11) class and Super Mini classes. Ryan Beat was Casillas' closest competition in the 80cc dass, and came out shining in the junior Cycle (9-11) battles. Old Phart B (40+) rider Frank Hamlett stole his share of the limelight by holeshotting the first mota and returning to steal the win on the last lap of moto two. Emitt Kling, who had been absent from the Barona Oaks scene this year, showed up at least a foot taller and riding a 125ee. He quickly demonstrated that he hadn't lost his winning form as he rode to repeat mota wins in the 125cc Stock (12-15) and 125cc Novice Stock classes. In the SOee Beginner division, Peter Scully took home the trophy after chasing johnny Holmquist throughout the first moto. Holmquist lost control of his bike, handing the lead to ScuJ- ly. Holmquist had even more trouble in the second moto and had to work his way up lhrough the pack to finish in third. Scully took the second moto win with Chris Livingston trailing. Steve Cerda took the first-moto win in the Pee Wee Stock (0-6) division after starting last off the line. Overall winner Nolan Shultz holeshot the first moto, but lost it to Raymond Valdez on the second lap. Cerda stole the show on lap five of the seven-lap race. Cerda got holeshot in the second moto, but the determined Shultz took over on lap two to earn the overall. Valdez was second for the day, with Cerda in third. Results INTRO MX: J. Patton, Jr. NELSONVILLE, OH, JUNE 22 Davey Yezek and josh Demuth both took the Pro-class wins during round one of the 1996 Action Sports Supercross Series in Nelsonville, Ohio. The hot weather was matched by hot 125cc Pro-class racing, as Charlie Dunaway blasted off the line. jeromy Buehl and Davey Yezek slipped by Dunaway in the first turn and battled for the win for the rest of the moto. Keith Bowen got a horrible start, but then got on the gas and began shredding through the field. The top three ran away from the battle for fourth between Gaylon Dickson and Josh Demuth, Demuth putting himself in a secure second on lap two. Yezek hounded Buehl for three laps, getting beside him but never finding enough room to make a pass. Buehl went wide on the fourth lap going into the grandstand turn and Yezek cut under him. blocking his way to the top spot. Yezek couldn't pull away from jeromy, but rode well on hls way to the victory. Dunaway took third, and Demuth and Dickson rounded out the top five. Yezek was satisfied with his win. "Jeromy was making little mistakes and finally I was able to take advantage of it:' Yezek said. "He won't let me pass him in that spot again, though." Buehl was looking to turn the tables on Yezek in the 2SOcc class, but the 1996 National' Arenacross Series runner-up had a tough time i,n mota one. Demuth got a great start, but Yezek and Bowen were all over him. Buehl was taken out in the grandstand turn and had to play cateb-up for the rest of the moto. Yezek quickly passed Demuth as it began to rain and Bowen, wno was likewise nying, also slipped by Demuth. By lap three Buehl had passed his way into the top five and set his sights on joshua Sweat in fourth. Yezek's night soured when he slid'out in the infield sweeper.
