"Scott's bike is so loud people move over for him - it's like they think ·it's an ambulance coming through!" joked Andrews. "We have a disadvantage that way, but then again, if he's fast enough to catch and lap, he's doing something right on that bike." As they started the last lap, Andrews had a cushion of 13 seconds over Summers and appeared ready to take his first win of the 1996 series. Plessinger was another 20 seconds behind Summ!'rs, while Conner was completely out of contention at a deficit of two minutes. "I kept seeing Fred in the woods and I could see that he was only five or six secon\is ahead of me a little ways into the last lap," said Summers. "I knew I needed to keep pushing and he finally 'made a mistake. There was a rutted-out straightaway and he got in there and he must've gotten sideways or something, because when I got to him he was still picking his bike up. He was blocking most of the ,trail and he actually got going before I passed him, but it must've taken some of the wind out of his sails - I passed him just about an eighth of a mile after that." "I looked back on the last lap and saw Scott about eight seconds away and I figured, 'OkiJ.Y, I got this one,' but then I caught some lappers and made a mistake," s.aid Andrews. "I didn't have anywhere to go and when we got to the ~traightway he went to the.right and I went to the left, bu t he hit a ru t and bounced right over into me'. Down I went! After that Scott was right on me, and I was so nervous and out of breath that 1 made another mistake and that was it. Summers rode a hell of a race." With the lead for the first time in the afternoon, Summers pointed his big Honda towards the checkered flag and his fifth overall victory of the series. A frustrated Andrews checked in next, frustrated even though this was his best effort of the series to date. Plessinger led Conner and Hatch at sizable intervals. . "1 hit my foot on a stump and it just took a lot out of me," said Plessinger, who many expected to be' a favorite today due to his need for points right now. "I just tried to make as many points as I could but those guys were stronger in the end. I just couldn't ride on their pace. I need to regroup and be ready for the final stretch."
