moved into the lead on the blue groove with Bast and Bennett quickly closing. Kossuth got the jump on Sisemore off the back yardage and quickly steamed up to put pressure on the pack. Becker, Bast and Bennett were unable to reel in Sc.harnbers and began to get picked off by Kossuth, one by one. Kossuth first went around Bennett on the outside, then inside of Bast, and then avoided Becker, who went wide on his way to a sixth-place finish. Although Kossuth set his sights on Schambers, there weren't enough laps to give him lime to catch up and he was forced to settle for second. Bobby Hedden drew the inside starting position for the Scratch main, then watched. as Bart Bast d'rew lane two and Dustin Schroder took lane three, leaving the outside to Kossuth. Hedden was first off the line, but his lime in the lead was shortened by Bast, who got a slow start but quickly assumed the faster, low, bluegroove lin.e. Bast drove into turn three of the first lap as Kossuth and Schroder sorted out third place behind him. Kossuth soon grew tired of the outside marbles and went to work on the pipe, eventually pushing up to second place in front of Hedden and Schroeder. Results 5CR: 1. Hoffmiester masters Cambridge Short Track By Tim McBride CAMBRIDGE, MN, JUNE 29 Billy Hoffmiester proved that he is fully recovered from the knee injury that sidelined him for the majority of last year's racing season by piloting his 600cc Knight-framed Rotax to his first Open Pro-class victory of the season at the Cambridge Speedway. Eric Brouhard and Tony Kohner won the preliminary heal races, but at the £lash of the "real thing" green light it was Hoffmiester in control with Kohner, Kenton Longcor, Dan Zitur, Brouhard, Kurt Boehlke and the rest of the 13-rider field in hot pursuit. Although the top riders battled closely throughout the llClap feature, the top finishing order remained the same, with Hoffmjester garnering the victory. The Open B class also provided plenty of racing action. After the first lap of the main event, race leader Tim Gregory fell on the front straight, directly into the path of 250cc B-c1ass winner Marcus Bauer. Bauer had to dump his machine to the ground in hopes of avoiding the fallen Gregory. Although there was a collision, Bauer's quick reactions prevented any serious injuries. The riders were soon lined up for the restart. Lee Fealey pulled the holeshot, but as he led the charge out of tum four he slid out of control and fell, uninjured. Unfortunately for Fealey, the race was not stopped this lime. Stock Frame race winner Brad Prey assumed a lead that proved to be short-lived as Bauer slid underneath him in turns three and four of the next lap. Prey then thrilled the crowd with a high-speed off-track excursion in tum one. Frey was unhurt but out of contention. As Bauer raced to the checkered £lag. a three-way battle for second was won by Keegan Iverson. Ron Brisbin and Tim Zemanovic had to settle for third and fourth, respectively. Twelve-year-old Adam Henrichs used the tactics of an experienced pro to win the 85cc main event. While running in second place Henrichs waited until the final lap to perform a textbook block pass on race leader Troy johnson in tum four. Tucker excels at Elk City CC By Mike Connell ELK CITY, OK, JUNE 9 Chris Tucker won his fourth race in a row at round six of the Oklahoma Cross Country circuit, held at Music Ranch near Elk Oty. At the midpoint of the season, h~ looks unstoppable in his march to take the 1996 championship. Even with a front £lat he cruised to an easy win. The Elk Oty round was the fastest event of the season, with the experts averaging over 30 mph on the 9-miJe loop. The grassy, wide-open ranchland was blanketed with fourth- and fifthgear straightaways, while sand washes and a few woods sections served to add a degree of difficulty to the layout. This track was a favorite for many of the riders. As has been the case at many of the OCCRA races this year, a good start was imperative to win due to the dust. Tucker put his KX250 in front of the Expert class right off the start and never looked back. A flat tire near the midpoint of the race caused him to b.ck off some, especially after he lost the front end at the end of the fastest straightaway on the track and ended ul! on his head. But at the end, he held a three-minute lead over XR600-mounted Billy Spurlock. Spurlock put in another impressive ride on the stock four-stroke, but struggled with the soft suspension. Bobby Southard was a close third, finishing 28 seconds behind Spurlock. Louis Blackwell got the holeshot on the Over 30 Expert class and would stay there most of the race. On the first lap, Mike Connell slipped past Blackwell twice to take the lead, but each lime Blackwell answered back and kept his big CRSOO out front the rest of the way. In one of the closest races of the day, Blackwell took the win just six seconds over Connell.
