I.~VENTS Mike Klopp (1), winner of the 600cc A class, leads the race at Shippensburg Speedway in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania as Bob Sweeten (B2) begins 10 low-side. let the track dry. Unfortunately, it continued to rain intermittently throughout the day. Sunday's sprint races were held in dry conditions and were kicked off with the first handicap shootout of the 6eason. The Superbike Shootout pitted the top three finishers from each trophy dash class against each other in a five-lap sprint. The classes were handicapped by their average lap times from the previous day, but since one trophy dash was run in the rain" some believed the handicaps for the fastest bikes to be too much. They were proved mostly right as Sean Mowry's FZR400 and Tom Maier's GS500 kept the big bikes beh.ind them, Jason Hanson, however, put his head down and put on a show as he pushed his CBR600 up into third place. Varnes victorious at inaugural Shippensburg Short Track By Len Breech 46 SHIPPENSBURG, PA,jUNE)6 Kevin Varnes headed a' group of local national riders who signed up to help launch motorcycle racing at the unique, bowl-shaped Shippensburg Speedway and easily topped the Sportsman and 600cc Pro classes. Varnes had problems getting by Georgie Pr.ice in the Sportsman heat, but wasted little time before jumping in front of Price, Ken Mohler and Mike Varnes when the opportunity arose. The 600cc Pro was similar, with Kevin Varnes leading Price, Mike Varnes and Steve Johnson all the way across the (inish line. Bob Sweeten held a brief lead over nephew Price as the 250cc A class got under way, but Price took the lead off the second tum of the second lap and stayed ahead of the other riders despite a halt in the race by track officiais who wanted to survey the track's surface. Sweeten attempted an outside pass on the final tum, but came up short and had to settle for second. Mike Klopp grabbed the 600cc A lead from Sweeten, Roy Miller and Tom McGrane, Sweeten going into the first turn too hot and sliding out. Miller put a little pressure on Klopp in the closing laps, but was not able to make the pass. Klopp took the victocy, followed l:!y Miller in second and McGrane in third. Miller took the 250cc B final in a wire-to-wire effort, but Stillwell, WIll Russell, Bruce Miller and Billy Stillwell were close behind. After a slow start, BiUy Stillwell took over third on the second turn of lap six, passed his father, Ray Stillwell, on lap four, and fell just short of passing Miller on the outside. Milier claimed the victory, foUowed by Billy Stillwell and Ray Stillwell in second and third, respectively. In honor of Father's Day, several riders took home first-time wins for their fa,th rs, Brandon Robinson edged out John Lewis for the 55cc (46) win, Shawn Foster won the'65cc, and Chris Klinefelter held off Brian Phillips and Jared Mees for his first 85cc win. Expected wins were turned in by Frankie Locke in the 55cc (7-8) class, Rick Washak in the Over 40 class, Bob Sweeten in the Over 30 class and Bryon Germer in the 600cc B class. Results 50 (7-8): 1. Ruehle brothers rock at Brainerd Road Race By Paul James BRAINERD, MN,jUNE 15-16 The Central Roadracing Association's seasooopener at Brainerd International Raceway featured some close racing, but the two-brother team of Scott and Mike Ruehle ruled the Uniimited and Expert Heavyweight classes. In fact, Scott led every lap of the three sprint races he started. Mike took his win on the final lap after Yamaha-I\lounted Greg Fryer graciously let him go by to ,colled Kawasaki contingenc.y. Many experts in the Unlimited and Heavyweight classes view their CRA track time as practice for bigger events and can be quite considerate to each other when money is on the line. "Like a lot of guys, we use CRA races to finetune for the nationals," says Fryer of his Larson's Cycles/Ferree Speed Ranch-sponsored team. 'We burned up three sets of tires and had some problems this weekend, but we'll be,ready for the AMA national in July." On Saturday, CRA racers discovered how Brainerd's new track surface felt in the rain. Many of them found out the hard way just how slippery the new pavement can be. The mile-long front straight, used mainly for drag racing, was especially treacherous and claimed more than its share of racers searching for traction. The morning practice sessions were held in a downpour, so when the sun came out, the afternoon sprint and trophy dash races were delayed in order to UfL SfSPRT: 1. SeOIl Ruehle (Kaw); 2. Malcheski fine at Fernly MX By Bob Fabel FERNLEY,NV,PlNE15 John Malcheski's second-moto win gave him the overall in the Vet Intermediate class at FernJy International Raceway. The 'Nevada Old Timers and the Reno Over the Hill Gang joined forces to produce the first-ever night race at the the Fernley Nevada sand track. Moto one saw Malcheskj with the holeshot followed by Jeff McCollum and Grant Sannders. Malcheski maintained a healthy lead early in the moto while Gilbert Chick, in his first Vet lntermediate race, began a charge that landed him in second by the end of lap two. Marty Kennedy started to pressure Chick and made a clean pass on an ol\tside line on lap five. Kennedy stayed on the gas and passed Malcheski on the inside, in the back half of the AI McElroy-designed track. Tom Fisher began to dial in the track and moved past Chjck On lap seven. Fisher was gan~ ing on Kennedy and Malcheski when the checkers flew for Kennedy for the first-mota win. Moto two had Maicheski' with the holeshot again, followed by Fisher and Kennedy. Chick rode in third at the end of the first lap, and Saunders was close behind him. Malcheski and Fisher pulled away and the race for third heated up among Chick, Sa.unders, McCollum and Kennedy. Saunders attempted a last-lap pass on Chick. It didn't work, and Kennedy passed Saunders side by side ove{ a jump for fourth. Kennedy continued his aggressive approach but couldn't get past Chick at the checkered. Maicheski took the win and Fisher in second. Results PfW: 1. Normajean Jean (LEM); 2. Doug Nessler (KTM); 3.
