attempting a section) on several sec- . tions, mostly to preserve energy because of the extreme heat. We may have been able to get through some of the sections and save a few points, but it was just too hot." With an outstanding second and third loop, Hallsted just edged out twotime and defending National Champion Aaron. "It was so hot, 1 was just dying out there," said Hallsted. Clearly disappointed' with his thirdplace finish, Aaron said, "The heat got to me. I'm just not used to it. But the sections were much better." The club laid out 15 new sections along the same route run the day before. Once again, the loop was ridden three times. On this day, however, the sixhour time limit didn't seem nearly long enough. By the second section, riders knew they were in for an entirely different event. Section two was simply too difficult for the support and Expert riders. Even the championship riders were overwhelmed. Some championship riders didn't make it to the championship line split. The riders had to ride in and out of a deep ravine with a small creek at the bottom. After the first few riders went through the stream, the water crossing turned into a nearly impassable mud hole. If you made it past the mud hole, Championship riders had to climb a wall before attempting to jump a huge log. The back of the log had a pile of about a dozen 1- to 2-foot-diameter logs built up to allow a safe exit. Manniko showed the smooth, graceful style he had the day before to be the only rider to get through the section. Manniko's last-second dab gave him a 3. The rest of the Championship riders had to go through a stream, set up, then attack a huge wall before exiting. "1 can't believe they have to go up that," said one spectator. Most riders scored a 5 the first time through. By the second and third loop, many championship riders were making it up the wall while others were having spectacular falls. Hallsted impressed the large crowd with a lean on loop two and three. By the end of the first loop Young had the low score of 32. He was trailed by Aaron's 37 and Manniko's 41. Young scored another best loop score of 35 on loop two which was matched by Hallsted. After two loops, Aaron held a slim one-point lead over Hallsted. Once again, Young posted the lowest loop score on the final loop with a score of 29. Hallsted posted a 33, enough to squeak by Aaron for second place. . Aaron finished the loop with a 36. (l'/ SAT.
