When the checkered flag flew it was Lamson with about a la-second lead followed by Ferry, Dowd, Huffman, Lusk, Brown, Pichon, Windham, Gonzalez, and Chaparral's Brian Deegan held on for 10th after a solid ride Lamson was all smiles again after mota two' and knew he had the overall wIn well in the bag with his 3-1 mota tally. "1 was third off the start," said Lamson. '1 got by Ferry right away, cleanly, and then he stuffed me and got by. I had to regain my composure a bit, but got him when he ran into Huffman. I got Huffman a tum or two later. After being sick, 1 wanted to pace myself and I'm happy things worked out the way they did. I'm really looking forward to Unadilla." (Opposite page) Team Kawasaki's Jeff Emlg turned In flawless starts at Red Bud as he holeshot both motos. Rich Taylor (48), Larry Ward (6), Brian Swink (23), Jeremy McGrath (1), and Kyle Lewis (11) give chase at the start of the second 250Cc moto. (Left) Steve Lamson rode conservatively In the first 125cc moto after being sick all week, but turned it up to win the second moto and the overall with a 3-1. (Below) Team Honda's Jeremy McGrath won the first 250cc moto and was 00 his way to catching Emlg in the second moto, when he crashed hard In the ruts. He stili finished second overall with a 1-3. third, and they had about a la-second cushion over the rest of the field. Teammates Ferry and Lusk were battling it out in fourth and fifth places followed by Brown, Sheak, Windham, and Mickael Pichon, who was a surprise show after reportedly breaking his wrist a few weeks ago at Budds Creek (See Briefly... ). The battle for fourth through 10th positions waged for lap after lap, and was where all the racing action was until Lamson decided to try and force his way by Pederson on about lap 11 and went down. He broke front spokes, dented his pipe, and tweaked his radiator out in the incident. Pederson kept it on two wheels. "It was hard to pass because everyone was going so fast," explained Lamson. "I came inside on Pederson and my front wheel must've got caught on his footpeg, because the next thing I knew I was being dragged to the ground." "Yeah, Lamson and I collided," said Pederson. "We were going for the same rut - the same line. We got there at the same time and I saved it and he didn't." Lamson had been closing on Pederson but now he had to worry about Lusk, who got to within about a second of Lamson after the crash. Lamson held on to third, though, and the finishing order for l25cc mota one was set. • Dobb took the win with about a three-second advantage followed by Pederson, Uunson, and Lusk. Ten seconds later came Ferry, Brown, Windham, Pichon, Dowd, and Antunez held on for tenth. The start of the second l25cc National mota saw the "Budman" Antunez rage to the holeshot shadowed by Lamson, Ferry, Pichon and Brown. Antunez ~as gobbled up by the pack on lap one, and Huffman was also up with the front-runners. As the riders completed lap one, Huffman had secured the lead with some swift moves followed by Ferry, Lamson, Brown, Pichon, Team Primal Impulse/Bill's Pipes/Hondabacked Pedro Gonzalez, Pederson, Lusk, Windham, and Dowd was in 11th. Lamson got by Ferry and then Huffman on lap two, and started to put time on the field. Brown and Huffman were dicing, but not slowing each down and also got by Ferry. Ferry would have none of that, though, and stuffed his way past Huffman by taking his line away after a rutted, sweeping uphill. Dowd was charging through the field now, and had worked his way into sixth on lap five by stuffing Lusk in a rutted comer. The order after lap five was Lamson, Brown, Ferry, followed distantly by Huffman, Pichon, Dowd, Lusk, Gonzalez, Sheak, and Pederson. Lamson was pretty much gone at this point, bu t the racing action behind him was intense. Ferry fought hard with Brown before finally squeezing in for the pass for second place and never looking back on about lap eight. Dowd finally made his way to third after an ever-changing duel that involved Brown, Huffman, and Lusk. Moto-one winner Dobb was extremely tired after mota one and was way back in the pack. He would eventually finish ·35th in the mota. He was not around for comments after the race. 250CC NATIONAL Rain clouds rolled in for the start of the second mota and had people thinking things might get interesting as the first drops fell. The rain left as quickly as it came, and the gate dropped. Emig snatched the holeshot in 250cc National mota one with McGrath hot on his heels, followed by Burnsville Yamaha/ PJl/Xtreme/ Atomic 22's Jimmy Button and Swink. There was a big pileup in the middle of the pack that involved Suzuki's Greg Albertyn, Kawasaki's Ryan Hughes, Team Yamaha's Doug Henry, and a host of other riders. Henry 11
