VOICES Letters to the editor Trials snafu We enjoyed the article on our World Trial round (Issue #24, June 19) and the excellent photos which accompanied it . However, we'd like to point out that while British Columbia does indeed possess mountainous regions and excellent trials locations, the event took place in Alma, which is in Northern Quebec. Marilynn Bastedo General Manager, Canadian Motorcycle Association Hamilton, Ontario, Canada British Columbia? How could Peter Sengai be a witness to the fifth round of the World Championship Observed Trials Series and state that it took place in the "mountainous region of British Columbia" and in the Briefly... section state that Alma is "only 20 miles short of the Arctic Circle" when in fact Alma is at the other end of Canada, in the Province of Quebec, on the Saguenay River near its major affluent La Saint-Jean and some 133 miles from. Quebec City and some 1240 miles south of the Arctic Circle. r really wonder who briefed him about the quite accurate reference to "Alcan, the huge Canadian aluminum manufacturing plant?" As for the reference to "mountainous" - the area around Lac Saint-Jean is fairly flat; the nearest mountain is only some 2224 feet high, a midget compared to the Rockies of British Columbia where heights there soar as high as 13,000 feet. On the other hand, in the same issue, r found Paul Carruthers' Teardown article exceptionally good (about privateer Brett Metzger's surprise third at the checkered flag at Mid-Ohio). Robert Charbonneau Montreal, Quebec, Canada While Peter Sengai isn't the first reporter to write a story from an event he didn't attend, he is the first to have jailed so miserably in Geography 101. We regret the error... Editor. America's weekly moton:ycle newspaper Volume XXXIII Sharon Gayton, President Michael Klinger, Publisher myself cruising in ewport and Huntington Beach on sportbikes and "pulling the chicks." The next time you go to Cook's Corner, be sure to take the 1996 Suzuki GSXR7S0 (for the guy on the BMW R69), the Luca Cadalora replica Arai, and the way-cool Airwalks. Kevin Henriques Lancaster, CA Circa 1977 Having never made an error of any kindmyself, I felt compelled to inform you of a correction regarding the photo of Bruce Ogilvie in the "Looking Back" section from last week (Issue #26, July 3). The year was probably 1977 and not 1971 as the bike he is on is a 1977 Harley 250 MX, not his Harley Baja 100. Note the complete front end he chose was from a 1976 Yamaha YZ2S0/400, air canisters and all. Now be honest, was this one of those "backwards photo" contests? Lee Fabry Monrovia, CA Thanking the Rocket Although "Rocket Rex" Staten and a young mechanic from Pro Circuit named Buddy aren't ~cessarily affiliated professionally, they indeed are both generous, unassuming guys. At this year's recent Mammoth Motocross, I being both a rookie as well as an Amateur racer, suffered potentially weekend-ending bike hardships. When the chips were most down, these two gentlemen were the only two capable of getting me back on the track. Without hesitation, the two of them in their own way contributed to my success at the races. They provided me with sound components, good technical advice and, most importantly, showed me that camaraderie has nothing to do with your speed. You guys, along with the great Mammoth event, rekindled my stoke for motocross racing and its fraternity. Greg LePesh Los AItos, CA Cruisin' New fan I really enjoyed your Teardown column (Issue #26, July 3). It brought back a lot of good memories of my friends and I just returned from the Southwick National Motocross and the racing was great. It's easy to get fixated on the factory rider and stars - they are incredible. But when a knowledgeable spectator pointed out two privateers riding the ational circuit, who live in the area, r decided to keep my eye on them. They were amazing to watch. They rode with all their hearts and gave it everything. Tony Lorusso and Scott Carter charged up the crowd and got me pumped. as well. It's racers like them, along with Scotty Sheak, Buddy Antunez and Robbie Reynard, that keep me going back to professional motocross events. They never give up. Jeff Caldwell Lewiston, NY Stolen I just finished renewing my subscription to Cycle Nl':WS as it has become my only way of enjoying the sport I love. Two weeks ago, after racing in the Budds Creek Amateur National, my new 1996 Suzuki RMl25 (serial numberjs1rf1Sa 2t2100S84)' was stolen along with my gear. Yes, it was all locked up. It seems that the popularity we have all wished for the sport has brou~t in a less than desirable element. The hardest part to deal with is that I'm sure the person who stole th.e bike has no idea that it took me two years to save up for the bike, or the time and money I put into it so I could race. Unfortunately, even if I had the money to replace it (I don't and it wasn't covered by insurance), the dealers don't have any more left. I sure hope the 1998 model doesn't cost $8000. Thanks for putting out such a quality publication. Andrew Bare Phoenixville, PA Letters to the editor should be sent to Voices, Cycle News, P.O.
