JUNE 8 Jeremy McCrath came out to visit his home lr:lck and sped away to a double moto victory in the 250cc Pro division during the GFI Night Series warmup held at Perris Raceway. McGrath surprised spectarors by not pulling the holeshot at the start of the Combined Pro class, instead coming off the start in fourth place aboard his box-stock CR 25Occ. Out &ont was E.J. Wright, followed by Don Upton and Mike Chamberlain. Wright led for two complete laps, until McGrath moved up through the field and put pressure on the leader. Once out front McGrath railed the ruts, gassed it through the roughest sections of the track. and chewed up and spit out lapped riders like sunflower seeds while en route to the victory. Chamberlain was second-fastest on his Pro Circuit Yamaha, while Takateru Atsuta and Wright finished third and fourth respectively. Eric Schnell and Ray Hensley rounded ou t the top six'. The second moto saw McGrath pull the holeshot and vanish from the field on his way to another hands-down victory. Upton was the runner-upi while most of the remaining pros were lapped by McGrath. JUNE 8 Brae and Damon Bauer took overall victories in their respective classes while their father Eric roosted ro third overall in the highly competitive Over 3S class at Delta Raceway's MRA event in Delta, Ohio. Damon was the first Bauer to record a victory, taking the Micro (4-6) win. The youngest Bauer had the starts dialed in, grabbing both moto holeshots and motoring away from the .competition. Broc Bauer was king of the 60cc class after working his way through the pack in moto one and taking a convincing wire-to-wire win in moto two to secure the overaH victory. Bauer held off Steven Carnahan and Liam Murphy as the threesome ran in tight fOJ'lIlation throughout the race, Carnahan and Murphy finishing second and third respectively. David Bowman rode off with the Veteran Over 35-c1ass win, Barry Mayo finishing in a secure second. Eric Bauer put together consistent rides and nailed down third position over Jim Squire. Jon Schmitz smashed through the Over 25 and Over 30 races, taking victories in each and claiming second-place money in the Pro class. Results so (4-6): I. Damon Bauer (Yam); 2. MD, JUNE 8 John Plumb suceeded in doing what nobody else has this season when he beat Modern Vintage 750cc dass points leader George Richtmeyer during Round 7 of the AHRMA/Oassic Bike National Dirt Track Series held at Budd's Creek., Maryland. Two heat races set the starting grid for the eight-lap feature, and Plumb grabbed the lead right from the green light. John Skinner held second posiron until a dragging brake gave Richtmeyer the room he needed to slip past, after which he set his sights on Plumb. Richtmeyer was able to steal the lead from Plumb when the two bikes entered the comers, only to have Plumb pull ahead when they accelerated onto the straights. On the white-flag lap, Richtmeyer dosed in tight but lost ground when he slipped sideways exiting tum two. Plumb stayed alert and fended off a last-comer charge to take his lead across the finish line and notch his fust AHRMA National win in the class. Richtmeyer made up for his loss in the 750cc class with a win in the Classic SOO/75Occ on a hard-tail Triumph, passing second-place finisher Rusty Lowry at the halfway flag. Plumb "doubled his pleasure" by also taking a win in the Modem Vintage 250cc class. Other dass wiooers included 1995 Dinosaurdass champion George Wills, Steve Longo in the Modem Vintage 600cc class, Gig Hamjlton in the AHMRA Senior class, and John Daniels in the Oassic 250cc race, during which he held off a determined Ed Marshall. Oxley, Castro split wins at Costa Mesa Speedway By Elaine Jones COSTA MESA, CA, JUNE 21 Podiums were split at Costa Mesa Speedway as "Rad" Brad Oxley won the richesl race of the night, the Scratch Main, and "Fast" Ed Castro came away with the Handicap main win. Earning direct transfers to the Scratch main were Andy Northrup, Shawn McConnell, Bobby Schwartz, Oxley on the pole, and Rob Pietzing via the last chance qualifier. The start was almost dead-even as alI the riders cut a good gate. Oxley hit the tum and dropped down low, hugging the inside line. McConnell came from the outside and also shot down low, coming out of the comer in second position behind Oxley. Both of these riders like to hug the PVC, and once they established themselves no one was able to get under them or around the outside. Pfetzing came up with the third positiOn after finding the best outside line. Oxley, McConnell and Steve Lucero started from the 5O-yard line in the Handi.cap main. On the 40 was orthrup, Schwartz and Pfetzing. On the 30, the shortest yardage of the night, was Castro and Jake Zemke. It was all the advantage that Castro needed as he outgated Zemke and lead from start to finish. Schwartz, the master of the gate, dropped right in behind Castro but couldn't find an opening and had to settle for second. Pfetzing kept McConnell at bay for eight laps to take the show spot. • Dean Steele and Dwayne King went up against the formidable team of Peter Lewis and Jamie Macy in the Sidecar main. Throw into the mix the new Kawasaki ZX-IO that Dirk Gardner and Doug Lynch debuted and there was some beautiful as well as exotic equipment on the track. It was all about brute horsepower as Steele and King got the gate with John Matherson and Scott Cole in second. Matherson and Cole held on for two laps before both teams of Lewis and Macy and Gardner and Lynch passed them by. With only one lap left, the race finished with Steele and King as the victors. Kon Baur lead the Support main from start to finish. John DeFries got past Rowley on the first lap to pick up second, and Rawley finished in third. Results SCR: 1. Brad Oxley (We); 2. Tanner "'ohn (Kaw~ Aden awesome at Lake Perris Speedway By Elaine Jones LAKE PERRIS. CA. JUNE 19 John Aden, the young man from the High Desert, was absolutely awesome at the Lake Perris Speedway long track Wednesday night as the speedway bikes returned for the second time in two weeks ro do battle on the quarter-mile oval. After one round of Scratch racing, Doug Nicol, Steve Lucero, Jesse Finch and Aden had each won their respective heats. In round two. things started to tighten up as Aden and Lucero were the only two to repeat. Don Odom and Lance King picked up wins, bringing the number of possible riders to six. Round three saw Gary Hicks get things going again after having carbureror problems in round two. He finished the night with a second and first. King put together another great ride and earned his second win. With two more heats still to run the question was whether Aden's score would stand up. Aden took no chances and again made himsel{ the one to chase. There remained no doubt that Aden would be in the main with his three-forthree record. Lucero finished in second but his two firsts were enough to earn him a main-event spot. The final "go" went to Nicol, and when the points were tallied King and Finch joined Aden and Lucero, each with 13 points, as did Castro and Nicol with 12. The pole went to Castro, with Nicol in two and the undeafeated Aden in lane three. Finch drew four, and King started in five. Lucero and Aden cut the gate ex·pertJy, Lucero getting to the comer first. Nicol established himself in the third spot, but was under pressure &om King. Lucero appeared to have things well in hand, but on the white-flag lap Aden went for it and got the edge down the back straight, driving hard into three and grabbing a lead that he carried all the way to the checkered. Lucero finished in second and King passed Castro on the second lap to claim third. Finch and Nicol rounded out the field. Odom, Hicks, Andy Northrup, Jake Zemke, Steve Furman and Bobby Schwartz made up the Scratch Consi, and it was Hicks who showed the boys the way home by going wire-to-wire for the win. Schwartz rode in the second position until he slipped out of the groove allowing Odom, Furman, Northrup and Zemke pass. One lap later Northrup put the moves on Furman, and emerged with the third spot behind Hicks in first and Odom in second. Furman lead the Support main for two laps before his motor went away and allowed Rick Proger to take over the last two laps, topping John O'Neil and Charlie Cooley. It was a race of the titans as Dean Steele and Dwayne King went head-to-head with the team
