San Marino, July 28 World Championship 125cc MX series Round 8: British GP Seven up '* By Alex-Hodgkinson SWINDON, ENGLAND, JUNE 23 T he majority of the large crowd at the Foxhills doubleheader had come to s~e Paul Malin repeat his 1995 victory in the 125cc GP. The 24-year-old Brit responded to the fervent support and rode his heart out, but even that was not enough to prevent 17-year-old French sensation Sebastien TorteJli from extending his record win streak to seVen in a row. Tortelli went 1-1, Malin 2-2, before both were sent down the steep-sided valley to salute the gallery who had marveled at their skills. The day before, the English soccer team had qualified to play Germany in the semifinals of the European championship at London's Wembley stadium and the whole country seemed gripped in jingoistic fever, but Tortelli's graceful style and outrageous pace won over the hearts of all but the most partisan onlookers and he was applauded all around the track long before the end of the second 45-minute race. His race times were fast enough to have secured 4-2 finishes in the 250cc GP, while Malin would also have finished in the top six of the "premier" class each· time. Even after the first moto, Malin had still not given up hope. "I know I am faster than him here," said Malin. "1 tensed up early on and my forearms pumped up for the first half of the race; I could hardly work the front brake. Even then I was holding him until I made a mistake, spun out in a hole and let him catch me up. He would never have caught me otherwise." On the podium at the end of the day's racing he had to admit that TortelIi was simply riding brilliantly. "The crown is Sebastien's," said Malin. "He's just riding so well at the moment. At least 1 am now second in the championship." With a 67-point lead and four GPs sensation Sebatien' Tortelli ex1ended his win streak to seven with his double victory at the British Grand Prix. (Below) British rider Paul Malin couldn't match Tortelli's pace and finished second in both motos. • remaining, Tortelli could become the sport's youngest-ever world champion on July 14 in Slovenia. He will be 17 years and 329 days old that day; Stefan Everts was 18 years and 265 days when he won the 12Scc crown in 1991. Luigi Seguy holeshot the moto-one start on the fantastically fast Italian-built T'M, but Malin was right on him as they completed the first lap. Tortelli was fourth behind Camerlengo. Malin knew he had to escape if he }'las' to stand a chance, ~nd halfway through the second lap he stormed past Seguy on a long climb after gaining momentum in the turn. But it was just one more lap before the championship leader was in his wake. Just before the quarter-hour stage came the mistake which let Tortelli close up, and by the time Malin settled again it was all over. Veteran Michele Fanton, who always goes well at Foxhills, was intent on earning good prize money to pay the $500 fine levied against him on Saturday for hi.tting a flagman, and by the time the race was half over-he had disposed of younger rivals Vialle, Seguy, Dal Lago, Cameriengo and Belometti. The award for the bravest rider went to Collin Dugmore, who finished the first moto despite the pain of a possible a broken foot. "I ran into the fence early on," said Dugmore. "I think I've broken the bone in the middle of the right foot but I need the points and didn't want to pull out." On the final lap he too)< ninth from home-country teenager Carl Nunn. Tortelli blazed off the line in moto two, uncharacteristically grabbing the holeshot, and the race was over even though Malin was soon running second. "I got through quickly from fourth and I was optimistic for a time that I could turn that first race result round to win the overall again," Malin said. "I tried hard to catch Seb (Tortelli) and the crowd was great again, but he.is just too good." Once again, Fanton was to emerge victorious over the youngsters in the battle for third, his task made easier when Vialle crashed midrace and could only finish ninth, in the process relinquishing second in the standings to Malin. Pumped full of pain-killers because of his injured foot, Dugmore narrowly failed to catch Maschio for seventh, while Seguy registered his sixth successive top-six moto finish to take over fourth in the standings. But he is so far down that with four GPs still remaining he no longer has even a mathematical chance of taking the title.
