Past winners he July 19-21 round of the Worl<;i Superbike Championship will mark the fifth time that a round of the series has been held on American soil. The first three rounds, in 1989, 1990 and 1991, were held at Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota, with Laguna hosting the event for the first time last year. Chandler has continued to fly high in the series, and he currently leads the AMA Superbike National Championship. Those two should provide the AMA regulars with their biggest hope of a top finish. They'll be joined by their teammates Steve Crevier (Smokin' Joe's Honda) and Mike Smith (Muzzy Kawasaki), although Crevier will be coming back from the injuries he suffered in a personal watercraft accident prior to MidOhio at the end of May. At press time it was still undecided if the Yoshimura Suzuki team of Pascal Picotte, Mat Mladin and Aaron Yates were going to take part in the Laguna round of the World Championship, as the team was waiting for assurances from Dunlop that they would receive the top-level World Superbike tires. There are other AMA that teams will miss the Laguna round. Vance & Hines (Above) Belgian Stephane Mert_ _ elways e top Series. Here he rides his Hondeln 1990. Yamaha's Tom Kipp and Jamie James won't be racing. Ditto for the nonFIM-homologated HarleyDavidson VR1000 and its riders Chris Carr and Thomas Wilson. Fast By Ferracci Ducati will be on hand at Laguna Seca, though team owner Eraldo Ferracci wasn't certain if all three of his riders would be there. It's a fair .assumption that we can count on seeing at least Larry Pegram on the all-red factory Ducati. Last year, the AMA regulars benefited greatly from the local knowledge gained from racing in the AMA National every year at Laguna Seca. The Laguna Seca round of the AMA National Championship in May featured one of the all-time best 600cc Supersport races with Smith and DuHamel fighting to the bitter end, along with a race-long challenge from Kinko's Kawasaki's Thomas Stevens. Those three and the rest will be back for what will be round eight of the Pro Honda Oils 600cc Supersport Series as race promoters have again added the 600cc class as a support race for the World Superbike event. That also holds true for the Progressive Insurance Harley-Davidson Twin Sport race which will also be held on the World Superbike weekend. This race will give World Superbike spectators the opportunity to see the Ben Bostrom/Matt Wait battles that have been going on all season long in the AMA series. fN Schedule FRIDAY, JULY 18 • AM Track Inspection • Progressive Insurance H-D SuperTwlns • Camel 600 SuperSport • World Superbike • Lunch Break • Progressive Insurance H·D SuperTwins • Camel 600 SuperSport o World Superoike o Swift Formula SATURDAY, JULY 20 o AM Track Inspection o Camel 600 Supe!Sport o Progressive Insurance SuperTwins o Camel 600 SuperSport.
