Plessinger was still easing his way through the pack, trying hard to balance the need to catch the leaders and to save as much energy as possible for the stretch run. He was up to third by the time the twolap board came out. Up ahead of him Hatch and Smith had reversed roles, with Hatch now carrying the 20 seconds of lead time on Smith. When the leaders broke from the trees and into the huge field that led up to the checkered flag, Plessinger was first in sight. Hatch was a very close second but a slip right out of the woods gave Plessinger all the room he needed to make the finish first. Hatch came across a satisfied-but-nonetheless-frustrated second overall. Smith, having sur. rendered to the leaders earlier in the lap, was 90 seconds back in third. A latecharging Conner was just nine seconds behind to earn his fifth top five finish in the last six races. "I didn't know how I was going to do in the heat, so I tried to save a little bit there in the middle," said Plessinger. "Every thing just fell into place and I felt really good at the end." As for the rest of the series, Plessinger knows that the time to win is now for him if he wants to win a fourth GNCC crown. "I usually go better at the end of the series and I feel like I'm ready to get more wins. I've got three seconds and a win in the last four races. I just need to get more wins."
