Long before the night's racing began, it looked as though Price had the field covered. And he did, but not without a little help. Spectro/Moroney's Jason Fletcher strapped a big holeshot on Price and the rest of the field as the 17-rider, 12-lap 883 main event lumbered into turn one, and he started to stretch that lead rather quickly, but a front straightaway crash by Shaun Russell negated Fletcher's efforts, and gave Price a second chance. Then, Bartels' /Saddlemen/ Accel's Eric Bostrom got a flyer and led the second start. But Price was much closer this time, and on the fourth lap, he rather efficiently squared up turns one and two and powered into a commanding lead. That was all she wrote. Bostrom ran second and pulled out an advantage of his own on Wimer's H-D-backed Jess Roeder. Fletcher was sixth but he managed to pull away from bo;h Springsteen and Nathan Wait, and then permanently took over the third spot from Roeder on about the seventh lap. There was a bit of controversy on the final lap when Roeder and Wait made contact, sending Roeder to the ground hard at the end of the front straightaway. The tough Ohioan was up quickly and extremely upset with Wait. "It's plain and simple," Roeder said. "We were coming into turn one, and Wait took my bars away from me. It's a shame he had to do that. I'm protesting him. If nothing else, it clearly states in the rulebook that you must make a clean pass. He took my points away from me, now rm going to try and take my points away from him -legally." "I didn't even know we made contact," Wait said_ "Then when he came over to me, I went to the AMA and asked them what was going on. They told me that it looked like a clean pass to them, so I don't kno~ what he can protest." According to Roeder, the AMA would not hear a protest on the matter. Price was far ahead of any controversy when the checkered flag fell, pulling across the line with a sizable lead over Bostrom and Fletcher to claim the second 883 National win of his career. "I just stayed smooth," the unexcitable Price said. "Bostrom started hitting holes out there.
