Beavers rode with a smart agenda by ope n109 a lead , then rid ing just fast eno ugh to pace the riders behi nd him. Those riders beh ind him, however, had a battl e of their own . McConn ell was first ou t of the gate in moto one with Henry Hauen stein on his rear fender and pro mote r Dave Coombs, Skip Stewart an d Jack Mills ro unding out the .top five. Halfway th rough th e first lap St ewart wa s push in g Coombs . After riding side by side th rough a few co rners , Stewart p assed Coombs th ro ugh th e w oods. As Coombs began to fad e, Mills took over fourth place, passing Coombs on one of the many u phills. By th e end of la p one the top five positions w ere se t wit h McC onnell alread y pulling a lead on the rest of the pack . A s h er fat her pull ed awa y ou t front, Women's rider Jessica McConnell began a battle with Coombs . Jessica McConnell was able to get pas t Coombs o n a se t of uphill do ubles but Coom bs go t right b a ck a round. McC onnell scored the win, followed. by Hau en stein, Stew art. Mills an d Coombs. The Gibso nia Cycle /Transmission Magicians b acked Yamaha of McConnell wa s again ou t fro nt at the start o f the second moto . Hauen stein. however, was still back on the gate with mechani cal p roblems (he forgot to tum the gas on), allowi ng Stewart and Mills to fill the to p three. Coming up to the finish of lap two McConnell was right on Coombs' back tire wh en he hit the biggest puddle on the track and soaked. her. It was wa r from then on. McConn ell then found a good lin e and qu ickly sneaked to the inside to tak e ov er the positi on. Meanwhile, Stew art found his way to Mills' rear tire and the pa ir beg an a side-by -side battl e th at lasted until th ey e n te re d a d ownhill se ctio n.
