VOICES· Letters to the editor America's w eekly motorcycle newspaper Volume XXXIII Sharon Gayton, President Michael Klinger, Publisher Editorial Paul Carruthers, Editor The way it is Kit Palmer, Associate Editor Scott Rousseau, Associate Edit r o Mark Hoy er, Managing Edit r o Keith Bush. Assistant Edit rlCopyEdit r o o Cameron Coatney, Assistant Editor I had to write a note to let people know th e way it is. Wh en Cycle N ews called our office and asked if our contribu tors could submi t some eastern stories, my first reaction was "Why?" To his credit , Kit Palmer persisted and the result is a small flood of stories on Northeaste rn and N ETRA even ts that fra nkly h ave never appeared in Cycle N ews before. It's easy to claim we're in competition and make Cycle News try to get it on its own, but the truth is non e of us in this bu siness are in competition - no t rea lly. I have loyal Trail Rider readers now calling and saying, "Thanks for the stories in Cycle New s." Even if they know the y're goi ng to see n early the sa me thi ng in Trail Rider, and it makes me feel good for Tra il Rider and Cycle News. A wise man by the name of Burleson told m e so methi ng years ago when I was a dumb-ass cu b repo rter and he was the King of all en duros. I had asked if he found all the pressure from Suzuki, Kawasak i, Honda an d whoever else was trying to crack the Husky stranglehold on th e N ation al ti tle annoy ing, si nce H u sky w as se t to obviously dominate en duros for some time to come. And he to ld me th at we were all in th e sam e business. We were all selling motorcycles - and mot or cycling - and that was all that matt ered. He's still right. And you know, even thou gh w e' ve got ou r own good thing goi ng here at Tr ail Rid er, I still get a thrill when I p ick up Cycle N ews and see a story by me or one of my contributors. Good going. gu ys. We may not care how the hell they do it in California, but if once a month is not enough, by go lly Cycle News is still number one. Paul Clipper . We want to express o u r th anks to th e race prom ot ers, Rita and Dave Coombs, for the wonderful hospitality they extended to the lady riders of the U.S. Women ' s Motor cycle League . They were excellen t to work with an d they really took care of the women riders . Thanks for the recognition and the opportunity for these athletes to partici - pate in this prestigious eve nt. The AMA, which has been instrumental in providing this tremendous opportuni ty fo r the women riders, should also be acknowledged. We want to th ank Duke Fin ch , the AMA MX/Supercross m anager, for his support d uring the event. It is exciting to have this avenue for promoting wo men motorcycle riders an d the motorcycle ind ustry . Th eir dedication to the sport w as evident and well ap preciated . Thi s was a once in a lifetime oppo rtunity, given the caliber of the instructors. . All 40 p eo p le in a tte n d ance w ere e n lightened in one way o r a not he r about their s port. Even seve n -ti me World Cham pion Jordi Tarres made an appearance in the afternoon. There were als o se veral N at ion al riders in attendance, com menting that they coul dn't let an op portu nity like th is p ass th em by. Thi s school di d an awful lot for the promotion of the sport, for which we all ow e them our thanks. I wo u ld also like to thank Gas Gas importer Dale Malasek for helping coordinate thin gs. Michael Matthew Quaker HiII, CN To live or die Join Up on reading a recent lett er in the Voices column abou t th e banni ng of tw ostrokes in California, I feel the need to write abo u t th e follo wi ng subject: the AMA . So often I h e a r de roga tory rem arks abo u t the AMA and how th ey never fight for m otor cyclists' rights. The AMA has 200,000 m em bers, something ' they are very prou d of. This is a fact that utterly sho cks me. Think of the clout the AMA would ha ve if they had two m illion members, how abou t five m illion members? Th is tw o-strok e ban w ould be a non- issu e, as would so much of the othe r injus tices that motorcyclists ha ve become accustomed to. Think about other sp eci al in te res ts groups. Think about the NRA. The NRA can stop th e banning of weapons th at are of no us e but to kill people. They can do this because almost every responsible gun owner belongs to the organization . Th e politicians see that th er e are milli ons of votes that could be turned aga inst th em if they should upset th e NRA, so the y don't. . There is no rati onal explanation why a nyo ne wh o . lov es m otor cy cling shouldn't be an AMA member. We need to show the p oliticians th at w e a re a pow er fu l group. Our p ow er is represe nted by th e AMA 's m embership. I have belonged to the AMA for the past nine yea rs. Just so mething for you to think about.
