Pinnsonault blasted his nitro-burning
Honda to a 6.25-second ride to capture
his first win of the year.
800cc
Pro USA Hillclimb Te~m captain
Tom Reiser has won the York event
many times, and when he started off the
800cc-class runs, he was going for the
kill . Reiser put in a perfect ride, stopping the timer at 5.73 seconds. The end
of the run, however, wasn't so perfect.
"I didn't shut off quick enough and I
fell when I went over the top : ' Reiser
said.
The crash damaged the fuel-pump
housing on his Harley-Davidson, ending h is da y befo re he wo u ld ge t a
chance to make a second run.
Reiser's teamm a te Ra ndy Ga briel
came up next an d got a little sideways
off the start. Gabriel go t it stra ightened
out for a 6.16-second ride. The HarleyDavidson Pro Hillclimb Tea m of Lou
Gerence r, Harry Schreiber Jr. an d Mickey Den t all had problems at the bo ttom
of the hill, though Dent's 6.00 run would
grab him third for the day .
Steve Dresser, the defending 800cc
National Champion, also got sideways
off the line and had to fight off a wheelie
right afte r the first jump, but he still put
toge ther a 6.04.
With his bike broken an d fast time so
far, Reiser could only watch helplessly
as the 800cc class tried to shoot him
down. Gabriel couldn't better his first
run and ended the day fifth. Schreibe r
had to let off the throttle to avoid looping out, but he rode great at the upper
part of the hill for a sixth-place finish.
Den t ha d another good ride , but his
first time was 0.19 faster and netted him
third overall.
Dresser also turned in a time a tick
behind his first run's time and would
settle for fourth overall.
"I missed the timing on the sta rting
line jump:' Dresser said. "But it was a
good day for the Pro USA Team with
three riders in the top five."
The 800cc-c1ass riders were having a
hard time improving their times before
Lou Gerencer Jr. came to the line. His
first run had him weaving up the hill for
a 6.28, but Gerencer had his eyes on the
win. A good la u nch" had him on his
way, but his bike fishtailed at the midd le of the hill. Gerencer didn't let off,
fighting his motorcycle, trying to keep it
straight and ho ld the front end down
while holding the throttle wide open. It
wasn't good enough. Gerencer turned in
a 5.85, to finish second.
The last rider of the day was Rodney
Smith, third in the points coming into
Jefferson . Smith had a tough ride in his
first run after overriding the hill. Things
would get worse as he then broke his
throttle while on the line for his second
run. Smith thought he had it repaired,
but it broke again before he could start
his run, and the event was over. With
only one run to his credit, Reise r had
won another for the veterans.
