Cobos was competing in on ly his thi rd even t since breaking his femur ea rlier in the year aboard a moped. Japanese Beta Rays te amm at e s Ogawa an d Kuroyama rode steadily all weekend long. Ogawa actually led the first day u ntil the ninth section, but in the en d h e woul d en d up in a tie fo r eigh th with his countryman. Ogawa had more cleans, and was therefore awarded the position. Six American riders competed in the event , and th e top finisher was - as expected - defending National Champion Geoff Aaron. The factory Beta rider was visibly tight at the start of the event, but looked more like h is us ual se lf on day tw o. The tall New Englander drew more cheers than any of the Europeans as he gave it his all in front of his hometown crowd. Still , Aaro n en ded up a distan t 18th, th ree positi o ns s hy of scori ng his fi rst-ever World Championship po int. Lonn y Hallsted came nex t - the Oregon r id er showed much impro vement after his rece n t stay in Sco tla nd. H e was on ly four points behind the champ . Flas hy Jes s Kem p k es was 27 poi n ts further b ack, but t he flamboyant rider managed to clean a couple of sections en rou te to 20th.
