Oldtimers gather for Boise MX
By Phil Zemaitis
BOISE, !D MAY 11-12
,
Mo re than 120 of the senior sta tes men and
women of motocross came from as far north as
Canada and as far south as Los Angeles for the
eighth annu al Idaho Oldtimers Association
Motocross at Owyhee Motorcycle Park.
The format is simple: two days of racing.
four or five motos per class aver agin g 18 min u tes each real motocross ..the wa y it used to
be:
As the ga te dropped Saturday for the first
moto of the 60+ Expert class, Fred Sessions rocketed into first place with Sonny Neff and Duane
Spence hot on h is tail. Sessions wa s able to hold
off the challengers for th ree laps , but by th e
hal fwa y flag he began to fade, allo wing both
Neff and Spence to gel by. Neff finished way out
fro nt, Spence took second and Gene Hrobsky
ran a distant third.
The second moto saw Tony Armada grab the
hol esh ot with Neff again on the gas. The first
two rid ers diced for more tha n five laps with
Neff un able to gel by the determined Armada.
At the checkered flag it was Armada and Neff,
followed by Spence.
One of the best rides of the day had to be
that of Craig Schulz in the Over 40 Master class.
Schulz swept all three motos challen ged only by
local ride r Herb Nachti gall. Nobody know s the
track bette r t ha n Na chtig a ll as h e is th e
gro u nds keeper for the park.
Cooler wea ther gree ted the weary but enthusias tic group riders for day two. Neff pu lled the
ho leshot in the Over 60 Expert class and wa s
never really cha llenged . The second moto was
basically a repeat of the first as Neff again took
the checke red flag and the overall for the weekend. Armada finished second overall with
Duane Spence rou nding out the top three .
Over 40 Master-cla ss rider Craig Schulz
swept both of Sunday' s motos. A hard-charging
Nachtigal1 was just not able to catch the smooth
Schu lz, who wound up winning all five motos
scoring one of the best point totals for the weekend. Onl y Jayme Butler in the Over 30 Interm ediate class scored as well, winning his class.

Aztalan MX marks 25 years
By Andrew Bussen
LAKE MILlS,WI. APR. 27-28
Th e Azt alan Cycle Park kicked o ff its silver
anni versary seaso n with a No rth-Ce ntral Area
Qu alifier for Loretta Lynn 's Amateu r Na tiona l
Championships.
A total o f 695 rider s ente red 39 classes of
competition during the two-day event, resulting
in competitive racing action at all age and ability
levels.
Chad Johnson was the talk of the pits on Saturday, taking' overall wins in 85cc Stock (12-13)
and 125cc Stock (12-15).
Brad Modjewski wo n fou r motos on Saturd ay,taking the overa ll in 65 Stock (10-11) and 85
Stock (7-11).
Sun day' s event drew 555 of the 695 entries,
for this was a local district race and a qua lifier
for Mod ified Oasses and age-bracke ted classes.
The 125cc A Mod ified Oass was one of the
faster an d more competitive 125cc A classes of
re cent memory. Twent y-s ev en rid er s w e re
attempting to qualify for the Amateur Regional
Qualifier. Minnesota' s Pa t Don ah o holeshot
moto one, followed by local rivals Eron Ezerins
and Jason Warner. [erominski , Ezer in s, and
Nicoson utili zed their famil iarity w ith eac h
other and the track to pa ss Donaho. Donaho
held down fourth at the fin ish , followed by
Warner and Ryan DeGroot.
The second moto was mired in controve rsy
as a restart forced riders who thought they had a
good start and a trip to Tenn essee to take a free
lap and resume their po siti ons at the gate. It
appeared that Donaho had the faster line to the
first tum, bu t Nicoson managed to rail the inside
line and carve under Donaho, tak ing the lead
followed by Jerominski. Donaho, Chet Hodges,
Ryan DeGroot, and Ezerins. While Ezerins was
making things difficult for himself by picking off
rider s, falling in a ha irp in, n<>-brainer tum. then
moving back through the same rid ers ag ain,
Nicoson and Jerominski were in a world of their
ow n, swa pp ing positions throughout the moto
while sampling each other's roost. Jerom inski
held on for the moto w in and the overall, followed by Nicoson, Ezeri ns, Donaho, and DeGroot rou nd ing out the top five for the second
moto and the overa ll standings.
