Petty 's time held up despite Harry Schreiber [r., Tom Reise r a nd Rod ney Smith 's best efforts bef ore Rod ney Williams came to the line . Willia ms blasted off the first jump w ith his front end reaching for th e sky. He go t the Ca rl Williams -s ponsored mac hine level before he lan ded, and he kept it wi de open through the tim ers for a 3.20-second run, the fast est of the first round. Willi e Price al so made hi s first 800cc rid e a good one, fin ishing in the top 10 des pite ove rjumping the second jump. Th e last rider of the firs t round wa s Jim my Din gee, fourth ove rall in the 1995 seas on s ta ndings. After a good s ta r t, Ding ee crash ed h is HarleyDa v id s on o n the seco n d ju m p and may mis s the rest of the season. Petty put in a 3.128 on his sec ond run to take over the lead, but it was n 't easy. As Pet ty's Harley-Da vidson hit the top of the hill, bike and rider parted company. "I nearly had it s trai gh tened up at the top, but it wa s go ing to go off the side so 1 let go," Pet ty said. Dresser's second ride wa s also better than his first, but agai n litt le th ings cost him time, dropping h im to seventh. Gerencer came to the ' line ' in the 12th pl ace a t that point, but 3.07 seconds la ter he had the w in and the fastes t time of the day. Th e tim es cont inu ed to fall as Sch re iber and Mickey Den t grab be d the fourth and fifth spo ts for the day, edging o ut Williams, whose excellent first ride was his best effort. Sm ith had a fast ride tha t could ha ve been even fa ste r o n th e Ac t io n Mot o rspo r ts Yamaha. "I went off the first jump and it se emed lik e 1 wasn't ev er going to come down," Smith sa id. "Wh en 1 d id , m y foot slipp ed o ff the peg and 1 co uld n' t snap the throttle all the way o pen ." Smith's 3.12 9 w as good for third behind Petty. The presea son fav or ites appeared to pleased with their performances; 5:hreiber and Dent were satisfied with top-five placings, and Dresser ju s t misse d o n his t w o rides .
