stay close to lead er Lafferty, despite figh tin g persistent rear-braking failu re. KTM 250-mounted McH ale made his move on the third lap, getting b y the fading Petronglo, assuming third place and making it stick through the fourth lap . The steamy ju ngle conditions began to tak e its toll as lap times, less than 25 mi n u t es at the onse t had s te a dily increased. By the end of the fourth lap, Lafferty and Hoess had built such a lead over the rest of the field that the y were the only riders to make th e tw o-hour cutoff for a fifth lap . All others, significan tly including those chasing Hoess, were stopped after four laps. By th is time , Hoess had come to terms with his rear brake and had begun to reel in lafferty, reducing his lead to less than 30 seco nds . Unfortunately, this final charge was thwarted as Hoess ran out of fuel a cou p le of mile s int o the final lap . Seen wal king backwards on the trail, he still mana ged to scrounge 'some fu el and com p le te the rac e. Unfortuna tel y for th ird- p la ce fini sher McHale, h ad he be en riding th e fi n a l lap , he surely wo u ld have overtaken the ine rt Hoess and moved up a slot. The final results found Richard lafferty taking the overall, stay ing in the thick of the seri es points hunt. Lafferty completed five laps and said afterward that heat played a big factor in the race and that he was "happy to finish in the these cond itions. " Regarding the last lap and Hoess "ilI fate, Lafferty said, " I cou ld hea r someone coming up behind me, so 1just tried to wick it to the barrels. " Certainly words to win by. Hoess came away with the seco nd overall seeding, perhaps a bit fortun ate in light of his various p roblems. In Hoess' defense, he was racing a fresh-from-the-carton RMX25O, with little or no race prep. Fred said that he had bled the brakes, but failed to replace the OEM brake fluid with a tougher aftermarket blend . On the trail and scrounging fuel , Fred co m m e n ted, "I can 't believe that I couldn't get 4O-plus miles out of the tank. " Happy with a thirdoverall finish and solid podium effort, it was perhaps a bittersweet fini sh for Mike McHale in light of missing the cutoff for the fifth lap and not ge tting the chance to cap ita lize on Hoess ' distress. Larry Petronglo hung on fo r a fourth overall fin ish, while su rpris ing YZ125moun ted Senior-class ride r Scott Wolfsberger placed fifth ove rall and top s in a bloated Senior class. In B-class act ion, Craig Copeland wo n the 0-249cc class, while Dan Sharp less was top finisher in the 25Occ-Plus class. Novice-class winners were Lewis Robb ins in the 0-249cc disp lacemen t class, Robert Lockhard in the 250cc class and Lance Thompson in a the Openclass.
