stepped up in elimi nati ons, carding a 7.03 and a 7.06 in the first two rounds on Sunday. He then dipped into the six-second zone for the first time in his career with a 6.99 to get by the 7.04 of McClure in the semifinals. Breakage sidelined Wills in the semifinals, giving Lynn a bye run in to the final round. The handling problems which have hampered Lynn 's Schnitz-backed gasn itrous-turbo Kawasaki for the past year showed no sign of letting up as Lynn had to back off the throttle in the final, allowing Clark to gain his second s t rai g h t event win w ith an off-pace 7.24. Two o f th e top riders in the Arias/S&K Pro Mod Challenge suffered horrendous fires which completely destroyed their motorcycles prior to the Dixie Nationals. While Tony Sabino burned up Joe Franco's Suzuki in the middle of March, Rick Perry totaled the MRE bike just a week before Richmond. Both teams came back with a vengeance, meeting in the final where Sabino took his first AMA/Prostar event win. Working 18-hour days, the MR E team had rebuilt thei r Suzuki to storm to the number-one qualifying spot at 7.09 /194 - nearly a tenth of a second ahead of Pro Mod stando ut Billy Vase's 7.19. Sabino took the third position with a 7.20. Perry, the 1995 Pro Mod champi on, had the field covered in eliminations, running the low es tima ted time of every ro und . But in the fina l a loose nitrou s line spelled his demise, and Sabino wen t on to the win, 7.14/188 to Perry's slowing 8.20/ 127. With the NHRA running Pro Stock Bike cla ss at th e Mopar Nationals the sa m e weekend, the Fast by Ga st Pro Stock field was noticeably light. Reggie Cole qualified number one with 7.93 but was hampered by trans mission problem s throughout elimination s. While Cole still mad e it to the finals, a men tal error cost him the race. Cole cut a horrible C.773 reaction time in the final, and ev en though he ran quicker, Patrick Wise crossed the finish line first with an 8.15 to Cole's 7.92. Rick ey Gadson was the star of the facto ry classes, taking titles in both the 600cc SuperSport and 750cc Pro Superbike categ oies . In the Metzeler SuperSp ort class, Gadson go t by two-time event winner Rick McWaters, 10.70/ 125 to 11.14/123. Gadson mad e it a double win, beating Buddy Forbus in the Su p e r bik e fi nal, 10.57 /128 to the 10.62/128 turned in by Forbus. .,. Tim Goff took the Star Performance Pa rt s Top Gas title w ith a final-ro und vic tory over Na tion al Ch am pion Tony Mullen w hen Mullen suffered ignition problems. John Civitarese got the win in the APE Super Comp Series by taking out num be r-o ne plate holder Bruce Sauer in the final. Frank Maio got by Dennis Powell in the final of the Schnitz Super Gas series.
