Duri ng the flight, Greg told me stories abo u t racing all over the world. He ta lked abo u t different race tracks, people and other racers from around the world. It was a sha me that the flight lasted on ly an hour. Greg is prob ably the m ost la id -back of all the ride rs in the sport. For anybody who ha sn't met Greg Albertyn, I suggest you do so at a n upc om in g Na tional. Well, as fate or coi nci d ence wou ld h ave it, Pe te lost his life on th e day of tha t very issu e of Cycle News. I im m ed ia tely felt th e obl iga tio n to write an d te ll every o ne who h ad th e pleasure of knowing Pete that this had h a ppen ed , Al though I am sure there are so me who d idn' t know him, I' m equa lly sure th e re are many of yo u who saw hi m wi n 53 Saddleback ra ces in a year; o r co me back a number c:f times afte r stomach cancer su rgery to finish six th in the 500cc o utdoors in 1982. He was the best motocrosser to come out of the Loneji Valley, a great friend, an d a wonderful inspira tion to all who knew him. Godspeed, Pete Snortland, Thad Wolff Thousa nd O aks, CA Cops and firemen On Ma y 13 and 14, rounds one and tw o of the 199 6 Fi re and Pol ice Motocross Nationals were held a t Perris Raceway . This yea r' s even t had a sm aller turnout th an usual due to the numer ou s wildfires burning throughou t th e sta te, but th at didn 't sto p th e racin g from being as great as it always is when yo u brin g cops and firemen to gether on a moto cr o s s t r a ck . The h ard-working individuals who spend cou ntless ho urs of their ow n personal time in organizing and preparing for th is race to take plac e n ever seem to ge t the re cognition o r th e th ank -yo us that they deserve, So as a racer an d a law en forcemen t officer, I wou ld like to thank the following people for th e ir perseverance and dedication to th is gre at eve nt: Ed and Sue Wilson (Lo s Angeles Co unty Fire ), Steve Marquez (Los Angeles County Fire), a nd Mike Dunn (U5_ Border Patrol). I would also like to thank the m any spo nso rs of the Fire and Police Na tio n al s because as you know a m ot ocro ss racer is a m o tocro ss racer no m atter what walk of life yo u come fro m and we all su ppo rt th e .sponsors/ m anu fgcturers tha t s u ppo rt u s: White Bro s., First Mo to Racin g, Pro Circui t Racing, Ri vers id e Br ew ing Co ,; Murri eta Motorsports, Malcolm Smith Racing, and Wiseco Pistons. A nd by the way, ro unds th ree and four of the Fire and Police MX Na tion als are tentatively sche d u led for October at Glen Helen Raceway . Mark Da venport U.S . Bord er Pat rol Ag en t Temecu la, CA The truth? I just read an inter esting article in the Ju ne issue of City Bike. In th is arti cle, they claim that Dunlop was supplyi ng Honda an d Mi gu e l DuH am e l w ith ch e a te r tires for Supe rsport raci ng . Cycle News w as also implicated in less than ethical journalism in th e reporting of tire probl e m s by D u nlop . It is im plied t hat D un lop bo ught y o u th ro ug h advertising an d you h ired their ra cin g chief's daughter. Please prin t th is letter and respond. I feel that yo u owe it to the sport. David Bell Cas tr o Vall ey, CA Recently, City Bike, a regional newspaper printed in San Francisco, California, picked up some ncws items from stories printed in Road Racing World and Motorcycle Technology , a road racing mon thly based in Southern California, but still managed to get somefacts wrong. Without going into a lengthy rebuttal for which there L< really no need, let me explain a feu: of the inaccuracies in their reporting. First of all, although it is true that Laurel AUen (the daughter of Dunlop's head road racing technician, l im Allen) was employed here last summer, she was employed as an editorial assistant and did not work in our advertising department as "reported" in City Bike. Both City Bike and Road Racing World and Motorcycle Techno logy hav e implied tha t a C y c ~e New s reporter was allowed to attend Dunlop's preseason tire test at Daytona because we had hired Allen's daughter as a journalism intern. The truth of the matter. is that l im Allen and Dunlop invited regular contributor Henny Ray Abrams to attend the test based on the fact that th/?y thought he was the only professional reporter to have covered the event in previous years. The test session was also open to all media from 5-6 p.m. daily, and Abrams' reports were available for use by other publications - tw o options no one chose to accept. As for our guidelines on reporting on tire failures, etc. - it doesn' t matter if Dunlops chunk, Miche/ins go off or Bridgestones goflat. We report on everytIling that we feel is newsworthy and that includes both good tires and bad tires. Fortunately, we don't have to rely on tire companies providing us wit h racing tires because we don't run a road racing team from th e offic es of Cycl e Ncws... Editor.
