nowhere to go and tumbled ha rd in to the hay bales that lined the wall. Amazingly, neither rider nor their machines suffered serious damage and both eventUally returned for the restart. Once again Pauley led into tum one with Nickens and Camlin, undaunted by the vicious crash, in tow. Davis was also on the move again and took the lead by storming past Camlin, and then Pa uley, a t the end of lap two. For all practical purposes, the race for first was over. However, a tremendous battle was taking place for almost every other position. At the end of the 12-lap affair it was Davis with the win followed by a battle to the wire wi th Camlin holding off Pauley for second. Nickens and Miller rounded out the top five. HA RLEY-DAVI DSON 883 Defendi ng class champio n Mike Hacker put on qui te a show, riding his Spectro/Moroney 's Harley-Davidson Sportster to a har d-fought victory. Vetera n dirt tracker Lance Jones was also up to speed, taking t h e Rider's HD/R.K. Stratman / Jim Wagner machine to second . Dirt tracker-turned-road racer, Randy Tex ter did things a little differently by d ragg ing his knee instead of a skid shoe. Texter held off Willie McCoy for third place money. 750cc EXPERT The Carolina Harley Dealer's Association-promoted event climaxed with the start of the 750cc Expert main. Starter Poochie Cox dropped the green flag and the race was on with Varnes, aboard Randy Texter's Lancaster H-D XR750, took the early lead with Jones, Camlin and Davis in hot pursuit. Camlin, on his Skip Eaken-tuned XR750, was smoking bot h tires and testin g Varnes all around the speedway. Dav is was only a slight margin back in third with Jones, McCoy an d Chance Darli ng waging w ar over fou rth p lace. By lap eight, Davis had beg un to fade wit h a severely worn rear tire. Beginning lap nine, Camlin made a bold move to the inside of Varnes while entering tu rn one. The pass was close but clean. Varnes tried in vain to retaliate, b u t Ca mlin was very determined and took the win by less than a bike length. Da v is, aboard the Ben Ford lr./TCR Harley-Davidson, held on for third . Davis appeared slightly disappoin te d, as this was his firs t 750cc MARS defeat since 1994. "I think we m ay have chosen th e wrong ti re or p ossibly the w rong air pressure, bu t those guys were just a little faste r than I was tonight," Davis said. "Dennis Town did a great job with the motorcycles. We just got beat." In sharp contrast, Camlin was elated in victory circle. "I would just like to thank Mike Corbin for p uttin g together such a great team with Skip Eaken doing the tuning. My bi kes ra n great:' Camlin said. "I would also like to thank the guys a t Weibler H-D, Brenny's Cycle and Bell Helmets." a Myrt le Beach Speedway Myrtl e Beach, South Carol ina Results: May 18, 1996 (Round 2 015) 600 EX: 1.
