However, a tremendous battle was taking place for almost every other position. Starter Poochie Cox dropped the green flag and the race was on with Varnes, aboard Randy Texter's Lancaster H-D XR750, took the early lead with Jones, Camlin and Davis in hot pursuit. Camlin, on his Skip Eaken-tuned XR750, was smoking bot h tires and testin g Varnes all around the speedway. Beginning lap nine, Camlin made a bold move to the inside of Varnes while entering tu rn one. The pass was close but clean. Davis appeared slightly disappoin te d, as this was his firs t 750cc MARS defeat since 1994.
