ing and cycling to get me fit since 1
wrecked my ankle and can 't run, but the
doctor say s my hand will take longer if 1
ride midweek. "
The cha11enges of Vialle and Maschio
were in tatters from the first lap: Vialle
cras hed with Fanton in the first tu m,
and had to ride a blinder just to secure
eigh th , while an other fall for Maschio
afte r 12 minutes left him nearly last.
Ea sily the best It alian was Er ik
Camerlengo. Racing for the first time in
a month but showing no signs of tired ness the De Carli teamster confirmed his
Saturday speed to advance s t ro ng ly
from eighth to fourth.
Marcus Hansson, meanwhile, pulled
out after 15 minutes after gating ninth.
"The heat got me," admitted Hansson. .
"After being sick all week my eyes started to cross and 1 had to stop. There is no
point starting race two."
Tortelli's start was no t so good in
race two, but he quickly advanced from
10th, passing the holeshotting Carnerlengo befo re the end of the second lap.
Vialle had also been forcin g his wa y
up th e lead e rboa rd in a desperate
attempt to hold onto his compatriot, and
for two more laps he pushed hard on
TorteIli's rear wheel until the first excursion into the tapes left him with an ineffecti ve rear brake until the tape burnt
out of the disc.
By the ha lf-hou r mark, Via lie was
shattered physically, but so was nearly
everyone else, and Malin could not get
close enough to challenge. "I spent too
long early on foHowing them pas t
Ravagli," he said. "I kept trying to close
down Vialle, but the gap was staying
cons tan t and in the end 1 had to settle
for third."
Moore had gated badly. " I los t my
balance just before the gate fell," he said
after quitting after two laps. "There was
no point in carrying on to finish 15th or
somethin g like tha t."
Another early retirement was Mauro
Dal Lago, who had crashed in the first
tum .
.
Camerlengo held onto third for half
the race before Malin came pas t, and,
eventu ally tiring in the heat as could be
expected af te r so many weeks out of
action, lost fourth to Fanton, fresh after
hi s early first-race exit, five minutes
from the end.
The strongest men in the pack in the
closing stages were Brian Jorgensen an d
Maschio as they ad vanced fr om way
down to seventh and eighth.
