flapping in the bre eze , was enjoying a
com fortable lead over Walters, aboard
his punched-out, 416cc White Brothersp re p p ed H onda XR400. Manley and
Wal ters remained separa ted by ab out
five seco nds for much of the race with
Manley hanging on for th e win over
Walters. .
Young spent nearl y the entire race all
alone in third, wh ile ATK's Myers held
down fou rth - for a while . Myers was
event ually passed b y CCM r id ers
Fowler and Liles.
O nc e by Myers, Fowler and Liles
engaged in a heated due l that last ed a
number of laps before Liles made th e
big pass and held on to finish fou rth,
just ahead of Fowler. Myers settled for
sixth, far ahead of Smail and Lewis.
Dymond pulled off the track early in
the race after havin g crashed, w hic h
resu lted in his th ro tt le sticking in th e
su bsequen t laps. "With the big hills and
the d rop-off ju mp , I d idn' t wa n t to be
riding around with a sticking thr ottle,"
said Dymond. "1 thought it was best to
pull off."
.
In the heat of the afternoo n, Manley
grabbed the holesho t in the second moto
ahead of Young, Myers, Walters, Liles
and Dymond, but by the completion of
the first lap, Young had relegated Manley to second and began stretching out
his lead. Back in seventh was Smail, but
he wouldn't stay there for long. The
KTM pilot slowlybut surely wo rked his
way up th rough th e pack and by the
sixth lap was running second and gaining rap idly on leader Young. Shortly
th ereafter, Sma il darted int o the lead
and pulled away from Young.
Smail made it look easy on the now
rough, dry and dusty Glen Helen track,
as he cruised to victory . Bu t it was
Young's day, as his unchallenged second-place finish in the moto was more
tha n eno ugh to secure the overall win,
his second victory in as many weeks.
Walters broke free from an early skirmish with Dymo nd, Liles and Manley to
hold d own third place at the checkered
flag . Hi s 2-3 moto tall y on his Honda
XR400 ga ve him second overa ll. A dis tant fo urt h in th e m ot o we nt to
Dymo nd, follbwed by Fowler who got
off to about a 10th-place getaway.
Six th went to Liles, while Ma nley
fad ed back to sevent h. Lew is, H u sk y
rid er Don Franklin and Myers rounded
ou t the top 10.
By record ing his second win of the
series, Young now enjoys a fairly comfor table lead over Smail, 180-163. The
series resumes June 8 in Boise, Idaho. a

The Third Round is held at Camp Barbe
for th e Sta rvatio n Point Ride . Folklore has
it that during the Civil War, an infantry of
Confederate so ld ie rs were surrounded on
a hillside, where they were starved-out by
the Yanke e s - hence the name. But not to
worry, we promise plenty of food and fun
for th e third round of the Appalachian
