Don't believe it if somebody tells you
that con ditions like this are a grea t
equalizer. While others paddled , wallowed and shot giant brown rooster tails,
Canad ian Rick Hudson blitzed around
the track at an incredi ble pace on his '73
Ma ico 400, capturing the Sportsman
500cc and 30+ Expert classes. Hudson
was pressured in both motos by Suzukimounted Eddie Lambert of Toledo,
Ohio, who placed second in the 500cc
race and won the 40 + d ivision in the
combined 30+ /40+/50+ Expert moto .
Another master of mud was Maryland rider Darin Emswiler, who fended
off James Greenleaf in the Sportsman
250cc Expert race and easily notched the
Sportsman 125cc Expert win. The closest
race of the day came in the Sportsman
125cc moto as Intermediates James KostivaI and Craig Borders battled on their
screaming Honda Elsinores. Borders
was in the lead when it counted most.
A special award should have gone to
the guys muscling the real steel - the
twin s a nd the big Prem ier-class
machines. Phil Hanford rod e a hastily
converted '56 BSAGold Star dirt tracker
to the Prem ier 500cc Expert win over
Brian O'Connor's Ducati Sebring scrambler. O'Connor took an uncontested win
on h is ' 64 Rickman Tr ium ph 750 in
Sportsman Twins Exp er t class' while
Dennis Blev ins slithered his Triumph
TR6C to the Intermediate victory over
Graham Foster on a BMW R75 and Rich
Baulch on a Yamaha 650.
