instantly swallow ed up by a pack consisti ng of Reuben Frankenfield, Steve Johnson, Rick Kirk and John Scheehser. Fra nkenfield had learned the track by followi ng local racer s as he to ok tw o seco n d -pl ace fini shes in CCS Midd le weight races Saturday (and pocketing $600 in Kawasaki money in the barga in), so he set a hot 1:48.5 pace for the first two laps. He could not break away. Mea nw hile, local racers Bradley Zajic of Mi nnesota and Shawn Conrad of Wisconsin, who had been gridded near the bac k of the field because they had no series points, quickly carved their way th ro ugh th e field and joined th e lea d group by the third lap . "I knew 1 had to make my move right away and 1did it," sai d Zajic, who noted that it was his first Na tio n al e ve n t. " I knew Brad w ou ld pick his way thr ough," ad de d Conrad , "so 1 jus t followed him. 1 kept picking the m off one by one, keeping an eye on ho w mu ch time was left in the race." Franke nfield and Johnson traded the lead sever al tim es as Kirk lurked in thi rd. Zajic quickly sli ced through the lead pack and went into the lead on lap six, splintering the front group. Conra d fo llowed , ta king second on lap eigh t, ge tting Zajic on lap 10 and pulling away for a clear win. Behind Zajic a ba ttle for third eru p te d bet wee n Frankenfi el d, Kirk, Johnson and Scheehser. With three laps to go, Scheehser lost the front end in turn one, possibly due to the strong crosswind, and crashed hea vily in the fas tes t part of the tra ck. On the sa me lap , Kirk moved past Johnson for fourth. On the. fina l lap, Fra nkenfield missed th e white flag d ue the ambu lance flag being waved at start/finish at the same time, and Kirk laid a masterful last-lap, las t-t um pass on him to take third. "1 got sn ookered in turn 10," said Frankenfield. Conrad and Zajic 's one-two punch certainly stirred up the race, but did not affect the points standings . Kirk increased his points lead over Frankenfield from one po int to five, so the race is stil l wid e open.
