BERNARDINO, CA, MAY 12 or the first time in nearly three years a round of theAMA 125/ 250cc National Motocross . Series returned to sunny Southern California and approximately 15,000 spectators were on hand to welcome it back. Bv noon vehicles were backed up to Interstate 215, nearly three miles away, and some weary travelers were forced to trek and hitch their way into the venue. And they weren't disappointed. The Glen Helen National was basicallv a homecoming event for Team Honda/s Jeremy McGrath, and he did not let his screaming fans down one bit, making it a two-moto sweep in the 250cc class for a perfect day of racing. This chain of even ts came as qui te a surprise, though, since McGrath had injured his right knee whil e pr acticing earlier in the week and did not . attend practice on Friday. Rumors were flying aro und the pit as to how the injury happened and how the defending champ would perform under the pres sure called pain. "I hurt m y kn ee while practicing on Wednesday," exp lained McGrath. "Th e doctor says I have a medial co llateral strain and that it should take about two weeks to heal. 1 h aven ' t rid d en since Wednesday, but I want to ride and at least get some points - th at is, if I can' t win it." Second overall for the day woul d go to Team Kaw asaki' s Jeff Emig, who rode strong all d ay wi th consistent 2-3 mo to finishes, even after starting from way back in the pack in moto one after tangling with Great Western Bank's Phil Lawrence. Rounding out the top th ree positions in the 250cc class for the day would be Team Yamaha's Damon Bradshaw, with 6-3 moto finishes. Bradshaw was the victim of a bad start in moto one, and charged like a mad dog before settling into sixth. He was definitely on the gas and looking prime in both motos . Fourth overall wen t to TeamNoleen's Kyle Lewis after racking up 5-4 results. The outdoor specialist rode consistently fast and had great sta rts to boot. Fifth overall we nt to Tea m Yama ha's Doug Henry w ith an 8-8 score for th e day . Henry looks to be almos t back in h is National-winning form . In the 125cc N ationa l action, Kevin Windham took his Team Yamaha YZ 125 to 2-1 moto finishes, and secured his first ever National moto and outdoor National overall win. "I missed Gainesville because of my collarbone," said Windham, "an d have been trying to improve my results ever since. My YZ pulled me to the front of the pack in bo th motos, and I have to thank
