Realizing tha t the fron t wheel and clip-ons were facing opposite directions, Schnackenberg had to wa tch from the infield as Montano bu ilt up a huge lea d over ev en tu al second place-finis her Ma rk Foster. Schnackenbe rg fa iled to ma ke the 600cc Superbike grid. Foster shot off the line first, only to slip back to fourth as the pack entered turn one. Montano ducked un dernea th the front-runners and p ulled a way. Going into lap two, Montano had a hu ge lead while Kevin Holman and Foster tried to d ra ft second-run ni ng Akiharu Shigeno. Holman go t arou nd Shigeno head in g out of turn two. This order held for a lap, but suspens ion tro ubles caused Holman to drop to fourth. Foster wen t aroun d Shig eno as the pair entered turn fou r. Steven Engelbrecht pa ssed Hol man o n the back half o f the track before heading into lap four. Montano got h eld up by traffic in lap five . Fost er 'start ed closing th e ga p on laps six an d seven an d pulled within half a bike length of the lea der a t the start of la p eight. One lap later in th e sa me tum, Foster tried th e ou tside, dropped back b efore e n te ri ng turn tw o, a n d fina lly stu ffed it underneath Montano in tu rn three. Monta no d rafted by him go ing into the final lap, only to watch as Foster wen t aro und him in tum one. Montano made the sa me move in tum three as Foste r did a lap earlier to regain the lead and was ab le to break Foster's dra ft for the victory. The trac k was a six-mile loop tha t included po rtions of three motocross tracks tied togethe r with dense woods sections. A sp ring cold front that a rriv ed that morning contained a light mis t that, co upled w ith a few dusty sections, cau sed the riders to deal wi th goggle problems all race long.
