Cavanaugh cleans upat Starwest Motocross By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, APR20 Josh Cavana ug h cleaned u p in the 125cc Beginner ra nks by postin g the overall victory du rin g nigh t motocross raci ng at Starwest Supercross Park. Mike Powers controlled the pace during the ope ning 125cc Beginner moto aboard his Ma lcolm Smi th Racing-backed Suzuki. Cavanaugh carved his wa y through the pack after starti ng outside of the top 10, and his hard wo rk paid off in the en d wi th a st ron g second-place finish behind Pow ers . Davi d Hu tchinson was consi stent for third aboard hi s Pro Circuit Kawasaki whil e Mark Wickham and Anth ony Rosa s rounded ou t the top five. . The second moto saw Cavanaugh out front from the ge t-go. Rosas was quick to move into second and togethe r they left the fiel d far be hind. Cavanaugh m uste red enough courage to jump the front double and pull ed away to a convi ncing moto victory ove r Rosa s, Wickham, Powers and Sean White. Bra ndon Million showed spu nk en route to the 50cc (4-6) Stock-class vic tory on the ma in track. Million may ha ve wa tched one too ma ny Jere m y McGrath tap es since h e co ntinually atte mpted no-footers and ha lf-nac-nacs throughou t the race. Chris Slid (H on). eo the end of lap one, Hump was in front but Mike Tilotta was on the move. On lap th ree , Hump was still way out front , and Lucia was in second with Tilotta all over him . Just when it seemed H ump had it all sewn up, his Husky rolled to a stop, and he pushed it back to his pits to find the ga s tank empty. He quickly refueled and went back out in ninth place. At the checkers it was Tilott a, Lucia, Guilbeau, lagaza and Lee. Hum p worked. back up to seven th. The second 30 / 40 /50+ outi ng was the best moto of the day. Gui ld bea u had bo bbled back to fourth . H ump passed lagaza and pull ed in behind Lucia. Lucia pi cked up the pace but H ump passed him in th e whoops on ly to get repassed on the ne xt uph ill. Humphreys hums at Vintage Motocross By Harvey Mushman mER, 1X, MAR. 23 Rick H umphreys was th e winner in the 250cc Expert class at round one of the AHRMA /Vintage Iron spri ng series wh ich kicked off at Swan Motocross Park. In th e firs t 250cc rac e, M ike Laga za w as qu ick est to th e firs t co mer with Humphreys, Ca rl Kelley, Mike Snoddy an d Darry l Gu rley in close pu rsui t. Hump wa s by Lagaza by the end of lap one and left Mike to bat tle w ith Keller, Snod dy an d Gu rley for seco nd. At the checkers, the order remai ned the sa me. In th e second 250cc m oto, Lagaza, Kelle r, Sn od dy a n d H u m p h re ys s tarted ou t fro nt. Hump took the lead on lap one and went on to wi n w it h Lagaza, Ke ller, Snoddy and Phi l Gru ndy crossing in th at orde r. The first 30 /40 /50+ race had lagaza, Lucia and . McGe e all fig h t ing for the p oint. Humphreys was in fifth an d coming up fast. By WM."l: 1. T. Ct-rber (Ka w ). clinch the ru nner-up position, Day jumped from fourt h to second, pa ssing both o f them in the back section of the track . Day then set his sights on Wagner. With tw o lap , to go Day had cut Wagner's lead down to nothing. Day took the inside acro ss the tabl etop to set Wagner up on the first set of doubles and mad e the pass stick as they we nt through the esses. The two were bar-to-bar to re ceive th e white flag . Wagner pegged th e throttle going down t he fr ont straightaway and around the sweeping tum to retake the lead by eight to 10 bike lengths and went on to take the moto win, In the second 12Scc B moto, McAllister was in the lead with Wagner righ t on his fender and Day already trying to make his move. Wagner passed McAllister halfway through the first lap with Day do ing the same. Day then put the pressure on Wagner, and a miscue by Wagn er gave Day the lead . Wagner and Day raced wheel-towheel for several laps before Day could shake Wagner off. Day claimed a we ll-deserved overall with 2-1 finis hes. Stewart Photo by Star Quality By Ed Beckley DANVILLE, VA,MAR 23 Mitchell Hodges took the ru nn er -u p honors in 125cc A--class racing a nd wen t on to swee p the 250cc A division at the Area Ama teu r Na tiona l Stock Qual ifier at Birch Creek. Troy Brewer on his red machine led the first )25cc A lap around the creek. Mitchell Ho dges wa s in a tigh t secon d w ith Ter ry Kenned y in third . Brew er chose all the right lines and rode wha t appeared to be near flaw less rnotos, taking th e ove ra ll with ).) finishes over Hod ges' 2-2. Rob McWhorter took third . In the fir st 125cc B Stoc k-division mo to, Mar k Wagner took the early lead . Nick McAllister was in th e runne r-up positi on wi th Josh Capps knocking on his back doo r. By the end of the secon d lap, Wagner had about an eight-second lead . Aron Day, who had gated poorly, was on the move. As McAllister and Capps tried to HAMILTON, ONT. , CANADA,APR. 13 Chris Evans blew the competition away on the slick, concre te sho rt track ins ide Copps Coliseum Satu rday Afternoon and Satu rday nigh t. Evans' was fast qualifi er on his big Harley. In Satu rday' afte rnoon's race, Evans had to pass th ree riders after he got a bad start. Bob Sweeten led all the lap s of the mai n even t except the last one. Evans b lasted h is XR d own th e inside to take the w in . Sweeten was second, about four bike lengths ah ead of Bob Soberi ng. Evans w as also quickes t in the evenin g's eve nt. Whil e others struggled. Evans showed tha t experience pays as he collected firs t-place mon ey for a nothe r main-eve n t win. Sweeten jumped the first start and cou ld not adv ance to the fron t in th is race after being put on penalty row . Les Washbu rn hooked u p an d m oved to second and Soberi ng again claimed th ird .
