Some controversy aro se at the end of
the r a ce wh en a few of the riders
protested a checkpoint th at w as right off
the side of a pa ved road. The riders
complaint was tha t the officia ls left the
ch eck point an d h ad come out on to the .
road and w aved th em to come in even
though they w ere still 200-300 yards
d own th e road . H atch was o ne of th e
'ben eficiaries of th e ruling because the
burned checkpoint w ould have cost him
17 points.
.
"It w as dangerous because of all the
cars parked along the side of th e roa d
and the mot or cyclists had to pull off to
the side of the road due to the oncoming
car traffic, a n d th en what they were
d oing was com ing ou t of th e checkpo int
and writing down so m e numbers but
not all of them," sa id Hatch. " You can't
come ou t of the che ckpoint according to
the AMA rules . So they made it an
ob servation checkpoint and didn 't
penalize anyone th ere. "
.
With this victory, H awkins was able
to close to within one poi nt of the series
