For the first time in several ye ars, seven-time champion [ordi Tarres is not the ride r most favored to win. Though th e r e 's n o doubting the Spaniard' s ex ce p tion a l skill s and remarkable accom p lish men ts, the 1996 season has thus far begun to look like the beginning of the end for Tarres. At the "ripe old age" of 29, Tarres has been at the pinnacle of the sport for nearly eigh t yea rs now, and many feel his time is corning to an end . The challengers are many. ·Fellow Spaniard Marc Colomer was expected to be the heir to Tarres' throne, bu t so far it has been Great Britain's Doug Lampkin who has led the charge.
