When the tapes flew for the seco nd go, Oxley timed the start to perfection, took the lead by the first tum and ran awa y to earn his transfer to the main. In the main , Doug Nicol d rew the pole with O xle y, Stev e Lu cero, Joh n Ad en a nd Bob b y Schwartz lined up to the outside in that orde r. On the first light an anxio us Nicol jumped earl y and broke the tape , thus ge tting sent to the 20yard line. On the seco nd try the ga te malfunctioned and ag ain the tapes were broken . On the secon d lap Lucero came up u nd er Schwart z, tak in g him ou t a nd lea vin g third- placed Oxley with the lead that he would hold to the finish. Aden was also lucky enoug h to get by, while Lucero , wh o had not gone down from the co n tact, was able to han g on to third u n til th e fin is h behind ru nn er-up Aden. No action was taken against Lucero for the con tact with Schwartz. By Scooter Bell HILLSBORO, 1<5, APR. 14 Guy Cooper won both the 12Scc an d 250cc Pro clas ses at the first an n ua l Gu y Coo pe r In vi te tional at Hi llsboro Motocross Park. The first mo to o f th e 125cc Pr o class had Cooper jump out in fron t and lead all the way. Team G reen 's And y Bo wy er di d put som e pres ure on Cooper early in the mota, but Coo per was too much and pulled aw ay. Kenn y Bertra m ran a strong third to Bowyer. In t h e seco n d 125cc Pr o mot o , Bo w y e r grabbed the holesho t with Coo per, Marc Gifford and Bertram following. Bowyer led the first lap wi th Cooper within a bike length of passing. On lap tw o Coo per passed Bowy er on the outs id e and we nt on for the overall win. Gifford held off Bertram un til the third lap, w hen Bertr am mad e a n inside pass to take over third . In "the 250cc Pro motos Cooper walked aw ay from Bowyer. The Kansa s fans lined the track as Coo per pu t on a show . Bowyer ran hard to hold onto second . Bertra m set his sights on Bowyer, bu t cou ld not close up the ga p. In the seco nd mote the turnout was the same desp ite a change for the worse in the wea ther. Cooper showed wh y he is a National Champion: No t only did he lead the mota from start to finish, bu t he stayed Guy Coo per (50) left runner-up Andy Bo wyer (n) in the dust In the 125cc Pro portion 01 the Guy Cooper Inv itationa l In Hillsboro , Kansas. a ro un d a nd signed the local rid e rs ' a wards befo re leavin g. As the Amateur race lined up for their ensuing start, Burris began experienci ng di fficulties in keep ing his mot or ru nn in g. The you ngs ter was given his stock 60ee bike instead and a lot of enc ou rageme n t form h is p it cre w . When the mote-one gate dropped Brad Alarid gra bbed the holeshot. As the pack reap pear ed from behind Devil's Towe r, Alarid wa s still in the lead with Chris Phelan, Adam Luhrs, Brad y Sha rp and Adam Ha rvey in tow . After a poor start Burris bega n his char ge th rou gh the pack a nd by the end of the first lap he had moved to fifth. Meanwhile at the front of the pa ck, Alarid 's igni tion cu t out, leaving him immobile for some time. A still-chargi ng Burris then moved aro und Harv ey for fou rt h, w hile Sha rp advan ced to first by passing Phelan and Luhrs. As the mota wound
