Zitter kop f was in the pits with a cushion of
abo u t two minutes ove r Krause. completing the
firs t loo p in a little over 59 minutes, se tting a
blistering pace that would go unchallenged for
the rest of the race. The first 250 thro ugh the pits
w a s ridden by St eve H engeveld , w ho ha d
charged from eighth at the bomb to third .
The top positions remained. the same on the
sec ond loop with Zitter kopf takin g the win by
four m i n u tes over Krau se . Th ir d went to
Hengeveld followed by Ca pt, Shaffer and first
250cc Vet John Rud der.

Castaic Motocross

World's fastest 12-year -old motocrosser Travis
Pastra na mad e the tr ek fro m Ma ry lan d to be
part of the SSC-pro mo tc-d Race Arou nd the Lake
held a t Cas taic Lake Mot ocross Park and ended
up wi nning winning four classes , including SOcc
Open, 125cc Inter med ia te, Unclassified and
Team divisions .
A ll in all, Pastra na spent over four hours in
his saddle d od ging trees, doi ng 70 mph on the
beach , riding thro ugh the park, crossing bridges
an d w hee lying through the par kin g lot on a n
awesome 4.3-mil e course.
Pastrana's day di d n't exactly ge t off to a perfect start. "In the first Unclassified race [ started
on th e second row beh ind abo u t a h undred
oth er racers, " Pastrana said. 'Then once I start ed
to get goi ng, I hit a tree, then flipped it on to the
beach . I think [ was aboutIOO th."
Pas tra na climbed. into the top 30 by the midpoint of the race. On the final lap he ran fifth
and ma d e a successful charge into the lead.

to the line for the Minicycle race, whic h he wo n
by over four minu tes.
The next class was the 125cc Intermediates another hands-down rona way.
Finally came came the team race, in which
Pestrana wo ul d have to rely on Geo rge lamon te. a n ovice-class racer . Pas tra n a showed
unbelievable speed as he showed the lik es of
Shane Trittler, Jim Ho lley , Erick Kehoe, Keith
O' Neal and Mike Metzger the back of his jersey
en route to victory .
When the dust se ttled , Pastrana had left his
mar k at Cast aic as one of the most successful
r ace r s ev er to h a v e co m peted i n the Race
Aro un d the Lake.

Jason Dub in and Chris Neitzel were forces to be
reckoned with during the third and fina l round
of California Racing Club's 19th ann ual Tri-Race
series, held at the sandy Edward Air Force Base
motocross track .
Dubin won th ree ou t of four mot os to walk
. away wi th 125cc and 250cc Novice-clas s ove rall
honors , while Neitzel roosted to an im pressi ve
four- mo te sweep of the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes .
Dub in started things off with a runaway vietory in the first 125cc Novice moto. Nick Butterworth kept Dubin in sigh t for the first half of the
race before settling for second well ahead of Jason
Clark and Dave Riley. Clark holeshot moto two ,
bu t by the end of the first lap Dubin and Butterworth blew pas t in a great battle for the lead. Butterworth pressured Du bin a ll the way to the
checkers for the close finish. Clark took another
third with Riley and Eric Hancock trailing.
The first 250cc No vice mo to was a wild one
with Chu ck Kober passing holeshot art ist Bre tt
Bennett on the opening lap, then crashing a lap
later and letting Kevin Coleman lead the parade .
Coleman held off Michael Da vis and Dan King
for a short time befo re he we n t d ow n in th e
sand . King also we nt d own off a jum p shortly
thereaf ter, givi ng Davis the mot o wi n. Tyler
Buck managed to stay on two wheels and fin·
ished second th rough attrition. Dubin was the
fastest rider on the track, coming from last pla ce
on lap one to take third by the finish .
Coleman ran ou t front in round tw o until
Dubin sailed pa st o n a d ouble- jump-fiUed
str aig h t on la p three. Dubin had_ the shifting
sand track wired and easily pulled a way for the
win . Coleman held on for second, but Davis ' 1-3
rides earned the second- place trophy.

California.
Ne itzel's hard est-fought moto win of the d ay
was in the first 12Sec lnt ennediate moto, wh er e
he ga ted fo u r th behind Scotty Wa lk er , Mik e
Harris and Brian Ferrall. It took the en tire race to
do it, bu t Ne itzel slow ly passed them all for the'
wi n. Neitzel mad e life easier for himself by
holeshott ing rou nd two an d s taying clear of
Harri s for the victory.
Leading the pack out of the first tu m in both
250cc Intermedia te races a ided Neitzel in his
winning effort. Consisten t 3-3 rides by Robbie
Dunahm topped the 5-2 score of Paul Gilmartin
