VOICES America's weekly motorcycle newspaper Lettersto theednor "Viva Ducat i! Here's to Ducati once again. Winning at San Marino with John Kocinski abo ard just goes to show tha t Duca ti is in a class of its own. The funny thing abou t it all is... Doug Po len wins th ree titl es with Ducati and go es to Honda , then is unemployed . earl Fogarty wins titles on the Du cati , goes to Honda, then is...? At least winless. Did he make a mistake in leaving? I think so - he's flog ging a dead horse. Michael Green Livermore, CA That same "dead horse" has WO Il 10 of the last 13 AMA Superbike Nationals... Editor. Very disappointed I was very disappointed in yo ur article about the Vegas to Reno race (Issue #15, April 17). There was no news of any of the A mateur racers - just the Pros. Yes, the P ros a re v ery good, b u t m y so n Rich ard Barker an d h is p artn e r Ron Hon ea w on th e 4-Stro ke Amateu r class a nd were th e fir st Nor the rn Nevada winners . I think a ll th e A mateurs deserve as mu ch recognition as th e Pros. Th ey all worked very hard for this race, including th eir chase crews - w hic h prob abl y worked harder than th e Pros d id . You could ha ve at least posted at the end of yo u r article th e finis h ing positions of all the rid ers. I think their families believe they ar e just as' good as Ty Davis . Kendra Bar ker Sun Valley,.NV Unfortunately, we don't have the space nor the manpower to cover each and roery professional and amateur eueni across the country; thus, we focus more on the Pros than the Amateu rs. Eventually, the Amateurs turn professional and then they receive the coverage they deserve... Editor. Las Vegas-to-Reno I would like to take a m oment to thank Lori Co nway and her husband, Ray, for givi ng me the opportunity to share the exp erience of the Las Vegas-to- Reno oii- . road race wi th them this past March 29. In m y first lo ng-dist ance event it w as very co mfor ting to ha ve their k nowled ge and professi onal manner along to build my confiden ce in w ha t could hav e been an intimi d ating prospect : to co-ride 'IN ID : S E:' a Hon da XR400 across 500 mil es of Nevada wilderness. Unfortunately, m y co-riding duties were short lived as I crashed hard while attempting to negotia te the fog-lik e dust cloads in the ea rly stages. Aft er nursing w ha t I would find ou t lat er wa s a broken rig ht shoulder for 37 miles, I could not p hysically continue and assu med that our efforts would come to an end right then and there. Lori , how ever, w as writing a completely different ending to our desert r acing journal. Whe n it w oul d have been easi est to cu t her losses and pack it in , she amazed me with her courage and determina tion by not only continuing the ra ce, but finishing the fina l 270 miles in true lronman fashion. All told she completed four-fifths of the SOO ile distance herself, fini shing -m 187th overall and securing the class w in in the process. Ray did his job magnificently, patching up th e bike af ter my crashes and keeping it going strong right to the end. Broken shoulder and all, it wa s. q uite a thrill to be part of th eir team for th is .even t and I would jump at the chance to run wit h the m again a nytime, anywhere . Fro m w here I stand, th ese tw o people d eser ve a s ta nding ovation for their effo rts in bri nging this experie nce to a successful and m emorab le conclusio n. Lisa Gallo Las Vegas, NV Happy fan As an avi d fan of motocross an d su percross, I w ould like to tha nk Team Yamaha for their professionali sm and th eir friend li ness a t a recent a u tog ra ph session, held prior to the Indy Supercross o n March 30. My w ife and I attended a n d w ere very im p ressed w it h th e Yamaha MX team. The team riders we re frie nd ly and sig ned autographs for us. A specia l thanks to Pete Steinbrecker, . Iohn Dowd and Kev in Windham, w ho took th e tim e to answer our m an y questi ons about profes sional m otocros s . Ya ma ha s h o u ld inde ed b e p roud o f . th ese ge ntle men for their professionalism. Aga in, th anks for a memora b le w eekend at Ind y. D an Jones Springfield, IL Donald Barnes Most motorcycl e enth usiasts got th eir passion for th e spo rt fro m someone during ou r yo u th ; a ne ighbor, anothe r kid in school, or a relative. In my case it w as from my dad . My fathe r, Donald Barnes, was born in 1920, grew up during the depres sion, ser ved in World War II, m arried and raised a family - just like millions of other folks . But my Dad got the "bug" for motorcycles. He was given a 1929 Harley-Davidson JD for this 16th birthday and began a passion for riding, racing and collec ti ng m ot orcycl es th a t continues until today, 60 years la ter . Dad started IT racing in the late '30s and became an a ccom p lis h ed Expert, winning 35 local and reg ional races in Ohio. Unfortu na tely, World War Il halted his racing career and when he came back it was tim e to settle d own, marry his sw eetheart Dorothy, and raise a family. But he hadn't los t his enthusiasm for motorcycles and he opened an Indi a n dealers hip in his ho metown of Wooster, Ohio . . After Indian went out of business, he so ld off his Indians and later managed a co u n ty home for the e lderly with Dorothy. But the bug was still there and he wa s thrilled when I decided to follow in his footsteps and started riding and racing. I was a pretty good dirt tra cker fo r awhile, but was never as good as him . He was very proud of me, how ever, when I w orked for Cycle News Central back in the '70s . Dad rea ds Cycle News religiously, follows d ir t track racing and a ttends as .ma ny races as he can. And u p until last fall, he still rod e hi s beloved '29 Indian Scou t. But rig ht now he is in for the race of his life. H e's battlin g a brain tu mor. Dad mentioned th at it would be nice if he coul d let so me of his old frie nds and India n r id ers , like Bo bby H ill , D ic k KIamforth, Paul Pierce, Ernie H art man, and m any o th er m otorcyclists know a bo u t hi s ill ness through yo ur m agazine. H e just said : "Te ll them to keep riding as long a;s they can ." Larry Barn es Canton, OH Cards and lett ers can be sent to Donald Barnes at 599 Daly Drive, Wooster, OH 44691... Editor.
