ighteen classes and 79 riders participated in the American Historic
Raci ng Mo torcycle Association /
Speed & Sport Tr ials Series a t Sandhill
Ranch w here mo re than one typ e of
clou d hung over the racing that d ay.
Sandhill has been denied it's -permit
to continue to ho ld raci ng eve nts. Currently under a pp eal th e ou tcome may
close the facility, which has been ho lding races for over 23 years.
"I' m sure we will be given a permit
eventually," ow ner Tom Anderson said.
"But I cou ld really use the help and support of the pu blic."
Despite the clouds overhea d , the Tritook racer s up and d own, over hills
and boulders and around and on top of
logs. Each of the sections had four lines
laid out wi thin it. The line was decided
by the expertise of the rider, with level
one bein g the most difficu lt (Exp ert), .
two (Intermediate), thr ee (Ama teur) and
four (Novice or Beginner).
The variet y bikes kept the watching
as interesting as the riding . There was
ev ery thing from a Cotton to a H onda
and in between - big four-strokes to little two-strokes, all running one right
after the other in a very polite fashion.
Ken Hatch riding a Bultaco tied with
Way ne Sumner o n a Su zuki in th e
Senior Class. Ha tch and Sumner both
had six points and both rode 25 clean
sec tions, but Hatc h too k t h e win
beca use h e was six years older th a n
Sum ner.
John Ford rode his Greeves to a perfect sco re in the Premier Lightweigh t
Novice class, topping West Coast British
rid er Mike Green, who encountered
problems with a narrow gap bet w een
two large rocks on the third course.
"Putting-l!"ur foot down equals one
point," Green explained. "So on ce it's
down you might as well keep it there."
