.EVENTS Smith, North double at Mosier Valley Motocross By Kat Spann and The Beckster EULESS, TX, MAR. 31 Shawn Smith and Iod y No rth claimed d oub le class wins during the opening rou nd of the 24th Ann ua l Texas Series , an eve nt wh ich fea tured ' 594 entrants in a 62-moto forma t. Smith claime d the 125cc Intermediat e-class overall by way of a 4-2 finish against first-mo te w inne r Jason Eckho ff and secon d- mo te victor Sha ne Shimabuku ro. Sm it h return ed for the 125cc Open event and raced to a 1-2 punch for the overall against second-mote winner Anton io Coello of Monterrey, Mexico. Nor th, on the other hand, slam-du nked the Open 500cc class and then went on to challenge first-moto wi nner David Widme r in the 250cc Open, takin g the second- mote victory and the overa ll. Wichner holesho t the first 250cc Ope n moto and stayed ou t front from star t to finish while positio ns cha nged beh ind h im . Jayson Shatto raced in second throu gh lap one before No rth came from fifth off the gate to second in lap two. Donny Jackson, who gated two positions behind North off the sta rt, worked his way to thi rd behind Nor th in lap two and used lap three as a passing zone .to finish the race second behind Widmer'. North crosse d the fin ish line in third, followed by Jason Artinge r and Todd Kyser. Moto two was all No rth's as he wicked it up and stayed in front of Jackson from star t to finish . Widmer fou nd h is pl ace in th ird w hi le Kyser pa ssed Joh n Dragna over the finish-line tabletop for fifth. Kyser used the final lap to pass Jesse Simmons for fou rth before the checkered flag , whi le Jack son d id a ll he could to pass North for the win , bu t couldn't find a hole. . North' was the challenger in the Open 500cc class, forcing "Mig hty " Mike Boliver to chase h im in second . Lee Upton took th ird in mo to one, but de sp ite Darryl Smith's third in mo to two, Upton still held on to third overa ll by way of a 3-4 finish against Smith's 5-3 tally for fourt h. Elliot doubles at Dallas Amateur Supercross By Kat Spann and The Beckster DALLAS, TX, MAR. 23 Travis "The Terminator" Elliot took top ho nors in the 85cc (14-15) and 12Sec You th (12-15) classes d uring the only AM:A Amateur Supe rcross to be held in the Lone Star State in 1996, at Texas Stadium in Dallas. Elliott blasted off the gate in the 85cc (14-15) heat race with Scotty Tremble trying to edge out Elliott in the first tum , bu t Triab le ended up tangling with Levi Humph'rey int o turn one and both hit the ground. John George Jr. was there to take second uncontested, followe d by Brand on Cameron . Elllott nailed the holeshot in his 85cc (14-15) main as George tried to keep pace with him, followed by Tremble, who got by George early in the first lap and ran second before George counteratt acked in lap thr ee and repassed Tremb le. Tremble went ballistic an d start ed to pu sh too ha rd, almost losin g grou nd a cou ple of times . George got squ irrelly and miscued on one of the fina l jumps in th e e n d ~z o ne section, w hi ch opened the do or to Tremble for an easy ride in secon d. George remounted and finished third, followed by Hu mphrey, Cameron, Justin WettervilIe, and Bill Walden. Ja son Eck hoff h ad a g rea t rid e in th e B races, w inning both the 125cc heat and main . Eckh off battled for the lead with Travis Young and Shawn Smith in the. heat race th rough lap one. Eckho ff do u bled the trip le to pass Smit h firs t an d then used th e next tu rn to tak e th e insid e line an d the lead from Young. From that point on, Eckhoff led the race to the checkered flag chased by Nicholas Hamilton and Shaw n Smith . The 125cc B main had Eckhoff third off the gate with Young in the lead and Cory Grove in second. Eckhoff passed both befo re the end of the next lap as Grove tried to hang onto second. Young saw it d ifferently and passed Grove the followi ng lap and held on to the num ber-two spot all the way to the finish. Lane's bike was jud ged to be perfectly legal, and he was declared the winner. Tony Meiring was second in the class. . The Pro-AM Expe rt main saw Michelle DiSalvo very dose to a win, getting passed only on the last lap of the IT by Rob Damron. If anyone had any d oubts as to whether or nol Michelle was up to the task, this evening's ride by this yo ung lad y s hou ld ha ve si le n ce d all th e do ubters . She d id a great job of holding o ff Damron unt il he wo n with a desp eration pass on the fro n t st raig h taway. Billy Marti n took third. Open Atclass action again belonged to Damron, but this main ha d Kevin Bricker in second and DiSalvo in third. Rapp rocks Sears Point F·Pac By Mark Romero SONOMA, CA, APR 7 Steve Rapp continu ed h is meteoric rise by winn ing th e o pen ing ro u nd o f the AFM Formula Pacific Cha llenge, the AFM's flagsh ip class, at Sears Point. Joe Bret William s grablwd the early lead and held it through turn one, followed by Rapp, leggitt and pole-sitter Rob Mesa. Steve Leggitt was able to pull ahead on the faster second half of lap one and fronted the pack thr ou gh the ch icane and into tum one of the second lap. Rapp was all over William s as they bee-lined for turn two . Known for his lat e braking, Rapp passed William s in tight tum seven and started to reel in Leggitt . One lap later.in the same turn, Rapp was able to get around the more nimble Leggitt. Williams tri ed to clo se in on Leg gitt as they started lap four , and James Randolph pu lled a few bike length s a hea d o f Mesa, followed by seventh-ranked teammate Dou g OeRyke.
