Classic Bike Magazine National Dirt Track Series . . On Friday, Northern California rider Butch Cochran came on down from the "garlic cap ital of th e world:' G ilroy, Californ ia, to win the Modern 250cc class. Cochran ha d the p ole on his tru sty Hon d a, but it was Ga ry Davis leadi ng the pack tow ard tum one. As they came around for the first lap it was Cochran in th e lead, a position he wou ld hold until the end . Davis took part in six of the events, opening the even ing with a win in the Dinosaur cl a s s . Off the li ne, John Dupree put his Royal Enfield into tum one firs t, but it didn't take lon g until Davis and his Triumph 500 took ove r the lea d . Davis would end up takin g the win. In the Classic 350-750cc d iv ision, Herb Wolff held on to the mom entum fr om his hea t-race w in, pulled the holesh ot in tum one and held off Davis at the flag for victory. Eddie Mu lder foun d the time to sadd le up his old Triumph and tak e it out fo r a ride. Af ter being placed on th e back row, Mulde r made quick work of the Sen ior class . Charlie Southgate took second and Mickey Alzola third. Sa turday evening's half mile races might as well have b een ca lle d th e "Tom Horton Show" as of the 150 entrants on hand the former N ational rider was the on e who w alked away w it h th e most troph ies. Hort on ' s first w in of the evening came in the Cla ssic 250cc class. John Du pree pu lled the holeshot over Horton, but as they came a round for la p tw o Horton got past D upree. The tw o banged bars for six laps, bringi ng the crowd to its feet, and at the flag it was Ho rton who took the victory. Pu mped from that win, Ho rton repeated his 'act in the Modem Vintage 250cc class, th e Modern Vintage 300600cc class an d th e Modern Vintage 60D-750cc class as well. • Muld er scored h is second Seniorcla ss win in 'as many days while Davis p icked up a w in in the Cl assic 500cc class. Art Carter won the Dinosa ur class to cap off what all w ho attend ed ag reed wa s a successful weekend of vin ta ge d irt track racing.
